Known Genesis problems that end up at the scrapyard

Brake module corrosion on 2009-2012 Hyundai Genesis

Recall 13V489000 covers about 43,500 Hyundai Genesis sedans built from April 2008 to March 2012. The factory brake fluid did not protect against corrosion of the hydraulic electronic control unit that runs the ABS and stability control, and a corroded unit can reduce braking. On an old Genesis with a brake warning light, this module is a likely suspect. source

Turbocharger oil feed pipe leaks on 3.3T models

Hyundai recalled 2018-2020 G80, 2017-2022 G90 and 2019-2022 G70 models with the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 because the left turbocharger oil feed pipe can deteriorate and leak oil (24V191000). Oil on hot engine parts can start an engine compartment fire. A 3.3T that smells of burning oil should be parked and checked before it's driven again. source

ICCU failures that cut power on Genesis EVs

Recalls 24V204000 and 24V868000 cover the GV60, GV70 Electrified and G80 Electrified along with Hyundai's Ioniq 5 and 6. The integrated charging control unit can be damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which can cause a loss of drive power. The second recall replaced the first, so cars fixed earlier needed the newer remedy too. source

Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury brand

Hyundai sold its first Genesis sedan as a Hyundai, introducing it at the 2008 Detroit auto show for the 2009 model year, and added the Genesis Coupe for 2010. On November 4, 2015 it announced Genesis as a separate brand, which arrived in the US in late 2016 with the G80 and G90. The lineup has since grown to the G70 sedan and the GV60, GV70 and GV80 SUVs.

Because the brand is young, a junk Genesis is more likely to be crash-damaged, flooded or carrying a costly fault than simply worn out. The older Hyundai-badged sedans are different: 2009-2012 cars were recalled because their brake fluid let the ABS control unit corrode. On the newer cars, the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 has a recall for a turbo oil feed pipe that can leak onto hot parts, and the electric models have had two recalls for charging units that can stop charging the 12-volt battery and cut drive power.

If your Genesis was declared a total loss, read our guide on how an insurance total loss works in Illinois before deciding whether to keep it.

How we look at a damaged Genesis

Luxury cars hold value in their undamaged parts: headlights, wheels, seats, infotainment screens and body panels in good shape all count. We’ll ask where the impact was, whether airbags deployed, whether it runs or powers on, and for an electric model, whether the battery area was damaged or submerged. An electric model with an open ICCU recall may simply have stopped charging its 12-volt battery, so tell us which warnings appeared before it quit. If there’s still a loan on the car, our guide to selling a financed car in Illinois explains the payoff and lien release.

Selling a junk Genesis: questions

My Genesis is still financed and the insurer totaled it. Can you buy it?

If the insurer is paying the claim, it usually takes the car. If you keep it, the lender must be paid and release the lien before the title transfers. Tell us the situation on the call and we'll explain what Illinois paperwork the sale needs.

How do I disconnect Genesis Connected Services before selling?

Cancel your Connected Services account and delete any Digital Key you set up. Genesis also lets a new owner press Remove Owner in the car's Connected Services menu, which sends you a notice to confirm, so respond to it if you receive one.
