Cadillac models we see most
| Model | US model years | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| DeVille | 1959-2005 | 2000-2005 DeVilles are in GM recall 14V355000 for ignition switches that can slip out of run. |
| DTS | 2006-2011 | Successor to the DeVille with the Northstar V8; also covered by the 14V355000 ignition recall. |
| Seville | 1975-2004 | From 1993 the Seville used the Northstar V8, whose head bolts can strip the block threads. |
| Eldorado | 1953-2002 | Northstar-powered in its final years, so it shares the same head bolt weakness. |
| CTS | 2003-2019 | 2003-2007 cars sold or registered in Illinois are in recall 10V105000 for corroding front brake hose fittings. |
| SRX | 2004-2016 | 2004-2006 SRX models are included in GM's ignition key recall 14V394000. |
| Escalade | 1999-present | 2002-2006 Escalades are part of the GMT800 trucks NHTSA studied for brake line rust in salt states. |
Known Cadillac problems that end up at the scrapyard
Northstar V8 head bolt and head gasket failure
The Truth About Cars' history of the Northstar explains that its head bolts were threaded too finely and, after repeated heat cycles, pulled the threads out of the aluminum block. Coolant then leaked into the cylinders and oil, the engine overheated and the gasket failed, typically between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. The real repair is to the block threads, which is why it can be the end of the road for an old DeVille or Seville. source
Corroded front brake hose fittings on 2003-2007 CTS
GM recalled 2003-2007 CTS sedans sold or registered in salt states, including Illinois, because slush containing road salt could collect in the brake hose routing sleeve and corrode the fitting at the front caliper (10V105000). The hose-to-tube joint can then leak or rupture without warning. A CTS with a soft pedal or wet caliper should be towed, not driven. source
Ignition switch recall on DeVille and DTS
Recall 14V355000 covers 2000-2005 DeVille and 2006-2011 DTS, along with several Buick and Chevrolet models. A heavy key ring or a sharp jolt could turn the ignition out of run, shutting off the engine and disabling the airbags. GM's interim advice was to carry only the ignition key. Many of these cars have had several owners, so the fix may never have been done. source
The Northstar and why it decides so many Cadillac sales
If your Cadillac is a 1990s or 2000s DeVille, Seville, Eldorado or DTS, there’s a good chance it has the Northstar V8. Its known weakness isn’t the gasket itself but the head bolts: they were threaded too finely and, after years of heat cycles, pulled threads out of the aluminum block. Once that happens, coolant ends up in the oil, the engine overheats, and the car shows the classic milky residue under the oil cap.
That is a block repair, not a weekend gasket swap, on a car that may be twenty years old. That often settles the fix-or-sell question.
Newer Cadillacs fail differently. The 2003-2007 CTS was recalled in Illinois and other salt states for front brake hose fittings that corrode at the caliper. And the 2002-2006 Escalade shares its brake lines with the GMT800 Chevrolet and GMC trucks that NHTSA investigated for salt-belt rust.
How a junk Cadillac gets valued
Weight, parts and completeness drive it. A full-size Escalade or DTS carries more steel than most sedans, and Cadillac body panels, seats and lights find buyers when they’re undamaged. The catalytic converters matter too, so an exhaust that’s still in place helps. A car that runs and drives always does better than one with a seized engine, but a dead Northstar doesn’t make a DeVille worthless. Our guide on what sets a junk car’s value goes through each factor in detail.
Before pickup: OnStar, fobs and your garage door
If there’s a blue OnStar button on the mirror or dash, close or transfer the account by pressing the blue button or calling OnStar, then reset the radio or touchscreen to factory settings to wipe contacts and saved addresses. Clear the HomeLink buttons in the headliner if you programmed them, collect every keyless fob, and take the I-PASS off the windshield. The full list of makes we accept is on our brands page.
Selling a junk Cadillac: questions
Do you buy a Cadillac with a blown head gasket?
Yes. A Northstar with milky oil, overheating or coolant loss is exactly the kind of Cadillac we buy. Don't keep topping it off and driving; tell us it overheats and we will tow it free from your driveway or street.
Is an Escalade worth more than a DeVille?
Often, because a full-size SUV weighs more and its truck-based parts are in demand. The deciding factors are still condition, completeness and whether the engine and transmission work, so a complete, running DeVille can outscore a stripped Escalade.
