Hummer models we see most
| Model | US model years | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| H1 | 1992-2006 | The civilian version of the military Humvee, built by AM General. |
| H2 | 2003-2009 | Built by AM General on GM truck underpinnings; its gross weight rating over 8,500 lb exempted it from EPA fuel economy testing. |
| H2 SUT | 2005-2009 | The four-door pickup version of the H2, with a midgate opening the cabin to the bed. |
| H3 | 2006-2010 | The smallest Hummer, built by GM in Shreveport; 2006-2010 SUVs are in blower module fire recall 15V421000. |
| H3T | 2009-2010 | Midsize pickup version of the H3 with a five-foot bed; it shares the H3's blower module recall. |
Known Hummer problems that end up at the scrapyard
Overheating blower motor connector on H3 and H3T
Recall 15V421000 covers 2006-2010 Hummer H3s and 2009-2010 H3Ts built through May 24, 2010. The connector module that controls the heating and air conditioning blower speed can overheat, raising the risk of a fire. If you don't know whether the recall was done, don't run the heater or air conditioning for long on the way to a buyer; have it towed. source
Heated washer fluid module fires on the H2
GM recalled 2006-2008 H2s and many other GM trucks because a short on the heated washer fluid circuit board could overheat its wiring (08V441000). In 2010 it recalled 2006-2009 H2s again after new thermal incidents with the module's protection feature, warning that the module could ignite (10V240000). An H2 with an unrepaired heater module should be disconnected and towed. source
Hydro-boost brake accumulator cracks on 2004-2005 H2
Recall 05V043000 covers 2004-2005 H2s and several GM heavy-duty trucks with Bosch Hydro-Boost brakes. The booster's pressure accumulator could crack and separate, throwing fragments if the hood was open, and the fluid loss makes steering and braking much heavier without warning. On a high-mileage H2 with a hard brake pedal and heavy steering, check the booster first. source
A brand GM closed in 2010
Hummer started as AM General’s civilian Humvee, the H1, and grew under GM into the H2 and the smaller H3. When GM went through bankruptcy in 2009 it announced that Hummer would be sold or dropped. A sale to China’s Tengzhong collapsed in February 2010, and the last Hummer was built at the Shreveport plant on May 24, 2010. The name came back in the 2020s on an electric GMC.
So every gasoline Hummer is at least 16 years old, and most H2s are older still. These trucks were heavy and complicated, and an H2 rides on GM full-size truck hardware. That helps when it comes to parts value, but a big electrical or engine repair on an old H2 can still cost more than the truck is worth to its owner.
Weighing a junk Hummer
Size is the first thing working for you. The H2 was so heavy that its gross vehicle weight rating, over 8,500 lb, kept it out of EPA fuel economy testing. That weight shows up in scrap value, and the truck-based drivetrain, axles, seats and body panels have resale demand when they’re intact. The H3 and H3T are lighter but are still body-on-frame trucks, and the H2 SUT adds a pickup bed with a midgate, so tell us exactly which version you have.
What brings an offer down: missing catalytic converters, fire or flood damage, a frame rotted through by salt, or a body that’s been stripped. If you’re on the fence between selling privately and junking, our guide comparing selling, junking or donating a car helps you decide.
Pickup details for a big truck
An H2 is wide and heavy, so tell us where it sits: a tight garage, a narrow gangway or a back alley with low wires all affect which truck we send. If it has an OnStar button, cancel or transfer the plan first, and clear paired phones from the radio. Leave all keys with it. Other makes are on our vehicle brands page.
Selling a junk Hummer: questions
Does a Hummer bring more than a regular SUV?
It often does, because an H2 is heavy and its parts have a following, but a stripped, burnt or flood-damaged one is priced as scrap. A complete Hummer that runs is worth considerably more than one missing its engine or catalytic converters.
Do you buy the new GMC Hummer EV?
Yes. The electric Hummer EV, sold from the 2022 model year, is a GMC, and we buy damaged ones too. Tell us whether it powers on and where it was hit, since a damaged high-voltage battery changes how it must be handled and towed.
