Where Salt Creek meets the Des Plaines

Brookfield took its name from Salt Creek, which runs through the area on its way to the Des Plaines River. The weather service watches that stretch closely: its gauge on the Des Plaines at Riverside warns that at 9 feet, homes near where the two meet are threatened, and at 8.5 feet First Avenue by Brookfield Zoo is at risk.

If floodwater reached your car, we buy it as it is. If insurance has already paid out, check who holds the title now, because it may be a salvage title or belong to the insurer.

72 hours on the street, 7 days at home

Brookfield’s abandoned and inoperable vehicle article is clear about time limits:

  • On a street or other public property: no more than 72 hours for an inoperable or junked vehicle. A separate rule bars any car from staying in the same street spot more than 72 hours.
  • On private property: no more than 7 days, unless the car is inside a building.
  • After a police notice: 7 days to dispose of it, after which police can remove and impound it.

Most of Brookfield is single-family houses (about three in four homes are detached), so the usual pickup is from a driveway or a garage. If the garage opens onto an alley, keep 10 feet of the alley clear and don’t block a neighbor’s garage. Parking on a street to show a car for sale, or to repair it beyond an emergency fix, is also banned.

Work trucks deserve a mention. Brookfield keeps commercial vehicles over 4,000 pounds empty out of residential zones unless they are garaged, so a dead pickup with commercial plates parked at home can be a problem twice over.

Winter adds alternate-side bans from December through March after 2 inches of snow, and in emergencies of 6 inches or more, cars that don’t move can be removed.

Rust, paperwork and payment

If winter salt is the problem rather than water, our guide to how road salt rust ends a car’s life shows what to check before paying for repairs.

For the sale, have the title and your ID. If the title is gone, tell us what papers you have; Illinois rules determine what a scrap sale can rely on, and we confirm on the call. The tow costs you nothing, and you get paid when the car is picked up.

We also serve Riverside to the northeast and La Grange to the southwest, plus every town in our service area.

Selling a car in Brookfield: common questions

I have a dead work pickup in my Brookfield driveway. Is that allowed?

Possibly not. Brookfield's 54-798 bars commercial second-division vehicles over 4,000 pounds empty from residential streets, alleys and private property unless they are garaged. A dead work truck can also fall under the 7-day inoperable vehicle limit. We buy trucks and vans as well as cars.

How long can a broken car sit in front of my Brookfield house?

No more than 72 hours. Brookfield's 54-1291 limits an inoperable or junked vehicle on a street or public property to 72 hours, and 54-650 separately bars parking in the same spot on any street, alley or public property for longer than that.
