The village expects cars to run
La Grange Park spells out its vehicle standard plainly. According to the village’s code enforcement page, every vehicle has to be operable, carry valid license plates, and park on concrete or asphalt. In residential areas, a car can’t be in the middle of being dismantled or sitting in disrepair at any time.
That catches a lot of ordinary situations: the car with a dead transmission on the side pad, the one whose plates lapsed after a move, the project car with its hood off. The code enforcement officer checks proactively and responds to complaints, and the first step is a written notice, either a door hanger or a mailed letter, with a compliance date. That date is a good deadline for a sale.
Where the car can wait, and where it can’t
Most homes here are single-family houses with a driveway, so the pickup is normally simple. The trouble starts when a dead car has to go somewhere else for a while.
- Lawns and parkways are off limits. Pushing a car onto the grass beside the driveway to free up space is a violation.
- Street, overnight. Village streets are closed to parking between 2 and 6 a.m. Residents can request up to four overnight permissions per vehicle in any 30-day period, online or by calling the police.
- Street, snow. This rule looks ahead. Parking is banned on every street when 2 inches or more of snow is expected or has fallen in the past 24 hours, and an overnight permission doesn’t override it. A ticket counts against your nights, too.
If the car can’t go in the garage, the cleanest plan is to keep it on the driveway and book the pickup.
Loans, titles and payment
If you still owe money on the car, the lender is likely listed on the title as lienholder, and the loan has to be dealt with before the sale. Our guide to selling a car with a lien in Illinois explains the payoff letter and lien release. If the title is simply lost, tell us which documents you can find, and we’ll confirm what Illinois rules accept for a scrap sale before we schedule anything.

Selling a car in La Grange Park: common questions
My old car has expired plates but sits in my La Grange Park driveway. Is that allowed?
The village's code enforcement standards say every vehicle must be operable and carry valid license plates, so an unplated car on a driveway can draw a written notice with a compliance date. A garage keeps it out of view while you decide; selling it ends the issue.
Can I get overnight street parking for a broken car until you pick it up?
Residents can request up to four overnight permissions per vehicle in any 30-day period, online or by phone with the police. Those permissions don't apply when 2 inches or more of snow is expected, so check the forecast before you rely on one.
