An apartment village with tight street rules
Forest Park packs a lot into 2.4 square miles. Nearly two-thirds of its homes are in buildings with two or more units, and more than a quarter are in buildings of 20 units or more. It is also a transit town: the Blue Line’s western terminal sits at Des Plaines Avenue, and the Green Line ends at Harlem and Lake.
For a dead car, the street is where trouble comes fastest. Between 2 and 5 a.m., no car may sit on any street for more than 15 minutes. Near Circle Avenue, Madison Street, Roosevelt Road and Des Plaines Avenue the window starts a little later, but the rule is the same, and overnight cars on Madison or Roosevelt can be relocated or towed. Overnight passes exist, though only five a month.
And the village code bans leaving any nonoperating, wrecked or junked car on a street at all.
Where a dead car can wait
Off the street, the rules are kinder but not unlimited. Forest Park treats an inoperable car on private property as a nuisance too, and the village can order it removed. For an abandoned car on private property, the owner gets a 10-day notice; on public property, just 3 days.
The best waiting spot is usually the garage apron behind the building. Forest Park bans standing in an alley unless all four tires are on a private apron, and it wants 10 feet of alley left open. A car parked fully on the apron is legal and easy for a tow truck to reach. Parking in a building lot works too; just tell us the entrance and the space.
Two other limits to know: snow routes close to stopping after 2 inches of snow, and parking on a street to show a car for sale is banned.
Titles, stickers and nearby pickups
Every vehicle registered to a Forest Park address needs a village sticker, so when the car goes, update your registration as well. For the sale itself, the title is ideal. If it’s lost, you can apply for a duplicate (see our guide to getting a replacement Illinois title), or tell us what other papers you have and we’ll confirm what Illinois rules allow for a scrap sale.
We tow at no charge, pay you at pickup, and can often come the same day. We also serve Oak Park to the east, River Forest to the north and North Riverside across Cermak Road. Every town is listed on our service area page.
Selling a car in Forest Park: common questions
Can I leave my dead car on the alley apron behind my Forest Park building?
Yes, if all four tires are on the private apron. Forest Park bars standing in the alley itself unless the whole car is off it, and the code wants 10 feet of alley kept clear. A car on the apron is also an easy pickup for us.
How long can a broken-down car stay on a Forest Park street?
Very little time. Forest Park bans leaving a nonoperating or wrecked car on any street, limits overnight parking to 15 minutes between 2 and 5 a.m., and caps overnight passes at five a month. On public property, the village can remove an abandoned car after a 3-day notice.
