The sticker decides where a car can sleep
North Riverside ties overnight street parking to its vehicle sticker. Where the 2 to 6 a.m. ban is posted at the village entrances, only cars showing a valid village sticker may stay on the street. Police can grant exceptions, but normally no more than five a month for each vehicle.
That matters for a junk car because stickers lapse. The license year runs May 1 to April 30, and the fee doubles if it isn’t bought within 30 days of the due date. Few owners want to pay that for a car they plan to scrap, and without it the car can’t spend the night at the curb.
There’s a second rule that catches dead cars. If a household has more vehicles than drivers, the extras can’t be parked on the street between 12:01 and 5 a.m. If the dead car counts as the extra, keep it off the street at night.
Driveways, aprons and alleys
About seven in ten North Riverside homes are detached houses, and two in three are lived in by their owners, so most pickups here start in a driveway or a garage. A few local rules decide where the car can wait:
- Alleys: no parking in any alley, and no parking parallel on a garage apron beside one.
- Surfaces: the village’s property maintenance code requires vehicles to sit on a paved or dust-proof surface, not on grass, gravel, a parkway or a sidewalk.
- Heavy vehicles: trucks over 8,000 pounds, tow trucks included, aren’t allowed to park on village streets except for loading or active service, so the truck loads the car and goes.
The village runs from Cermak Road, its northern edge west of Harlem Avenue and the line with Forest Park, south toward Riverside. First Avenue divides its two grade-school districts, and North Riverside Park Mall sits on Cermak. Give us your street address and a cross street and the driver will find you.
Loans, titles and payment
If the car still has a loan on it, the lender’s lien has to be released before the title can pass. Our guide to selling a car with a lien in Illinois covers payoff letters and lien releases. If the title is just lost, tell us what papers you have, and we’ll confirm what Illinois rules allow for a scrap sale before booking.
There’s no towing charge, and you’re paid at the moment of pickup. We also buy cars in Riverside, which shares the 60546 ZIP code, and in Forest Park and Broadview. See the complete town list.
Selling a car in North Riverside: common questions
Can my junk car stay on a North Riverside street overnight?
Only with a valid village sticker, since the 2 to 6 a.m. street ban exempts stickered vehicles. Even then, if the household has more vehicles than drivers, 10.27.020 keeps the extra ones off the street from 12:01 to 5 a.m. A dead car is often that extra one.
Where should the car be when your truck arrives?
On your paved driveway or in the garage. North Riverside bars parking in alleys and parallel on a garage apron beside an alley, and its property code rules out grass, gravel and parkways. Tell us if the garage opens onto an alley so we can plan the approach.
