Your own driveway doesn’t count as storage

It’s easy to assume a car is safe from the code as long as it’s on your own property. Hoffman Estates says otherwise. Under § 7-10-2, an abandoned or inoperable car counts as a public nuisance wherever it sits, your own lot included, unless it’s fully inside a building or hidden behind a 6-foot opaque fence. The property maintenance code adds its own list of tells: a car up on blocks, sitting on flat tires, or missing its engine, wheels or tires is derelict.

When police find one, the notice goes to both the vehicle owner and the property owner or occupant, by hand or first-class mail. Each has 10 days to remove it or ask for a hearing before the village manager.

Streets and snow

Hoffman Estates doesn’t ban overnight street parking village-wide for passenger cars, but a few listed streets are permit-only from midnight to 6 a.m., and no car may sit on a residential street for more than 72 hours straight. After 2 inches of snow, plowed streets have to stay clear for 8 hours unless the street has already been cleared. A car that can’t move ends up on the wrong side of both rules.

Getting it towed from your home

About 60% of homes here are detached houses and about three in four are owner-occupied, so a junk car here is often on a driveway or in a garage. Tell us the year, make, model and condition, and say if the car is boxed in, has flat tires or is missing wheels. We tow at no charge and pay at pickup; same-day appointments are often possible.

Paperwork is quick with a clear title. If there’s still a loan, the lien must be released first; our explainer on paying off a car loan when you junk the car covers the steps. A lost title is a different problem from a lien: read us the documents you still have, and we’ll check them against Illinois requirements for scrapping before anyone schedules a truck.

Hoffman Estates and next door

Our trucks reach Hoffman Estates from I-90, which has exits at Barrington Road, Route 59 and Beverly Road inside the village. We also cover Schaumburg to the east and Streamwood to the south, and every other town on our locations page.

Selling a car in Hoffman Estates: common questions

Does a car with flat tires in my Hoffman Estates driveway break the rules?

It can. The village's property maintenance code lists cars on blocks, with flat tires, or missing an engine, wheels or tires as inoperable or derelict, and those can't be kept on any premises outside a building. Unless it's going into the garage, a free junk-car tow is the simpler fix.

What if I still owe money on the car?

We can often still buy it, but the loan has to be settled and the lender has to release its lien before ownership changes hands. Give us the lender's name on the call, and see our lien guide for how the payoff usually works.
