No grace period for unregistered cars at home
Mokena’s toughest rule sits in its property maintenance code. Section 8-2-3 amends the standard rule (§ 302.8) so that no inoperable, unregistered and/or uninspected motor vehicle may be parked on any property in a residential district. Not for a week, not under a cover. A car that runs but has lapsed registration is caught as well.
The traffic code adds definitions and deadlines. Under § 6-5-15, a car becomes inoperable after 7 or more days with parts removed or altered so it can’t run, and abandoned if it’s in disrepair or hasn’t moved for 7 days and looks deserted. After written notice, the owner has 7 days to dispose of it, and shuffling the car to another spot on the street doesn’t count. A yard where wrecked or disabled vehicles pile up is a nuisance in its own right (§ 4-1-1).
Streets, trains and timed parking
The street isn’t a parking lot for a dead car either. Once snow is more than 2 inches deep, no one parks on village streets until removal is done, and the owner is expected to move the car before it gets that deep. Front Street, Mokena Street, Denny Avenue and Hiawatha Boulevard carry a 2-hour weekday limit for nonresidents, and parts of McGovney Street are resident-only.
Mokena sits between I-80 on the north and the CN freight line on the south, with Metra’s Rock Island trains cutting through at Hickory Creek and Front Street. LaGrange Road (US-45) and Wolf Road run north-south, and 191st Street, LaPorte Road and Lincoln Highway cross east-west. Tell us the nearest of those when you book.
Selling without a village sticker
The village repealed its vehicle sticker chapter in 2013, so there’s nothing local to return. What’s left is the state paperwork. Tell us which papers you can put your hands on, whether that’s a title, a registration card or an old bill of sale, along with your ID; Illinois requirements, not village rules, decide what’s needed, and we’ll check your set on the call.
If rust is what’s ending yours, our guide on road salt and rust damage shows how to tell when repair stops paying. There’s no towing charge, payment comes at pickup, and same-day service is often possible.
We also serve New Lenox, Frankfort and Tinley Park; find the full list on our locations hub.
Selling a car in Mokena: common questions
My car runs, but the registration lapsed. Can it stay in my Mokena driveway?
Not in a residential district. Mokena's amended property maintenance code (§ 8-2-3) bars inoperable, unregistered or uninspected vehicles on any residential property, and one sitting on the public right-of-way in that state can be ticketed and towed.
If I move the car to a different spot on the street, does the notice reset?
No. Section 6-5-15 gives 7 days from written notice to dispose of an inoperable vehicle and says moving it to another place on the public way doesn't count as compliance. Selling it, or putting it inside a building, does.
Do I need to return a Mokena vehicle sticker?
Mokena no longer issues them: the vehicle license chapter was repealed by Ord. 2012-O-028, effective June 30, 2013. What you do need to handle are your Illinois plates, which come off the car before it's towed.
