The broad “not in current use” rule
Mount Prospect’s nuisance rule reaches past broken cars. Section 23.1403(D) covers any motor vehicle “not in operating condition or current use,” along with loose vehicle parts, left on public or private grounds, yards or streets. A car that technically starts but hasn’t moved since last winter can draw a notice.
Once notice arrives by mail and is posted at the property, the default is 14 days to fix the problem. After that, the village can abate it and assess the cost against the land. On the street, timing is shorter: police can tow a car that appears abandoned after 10 hours, and the owner pays the tow.
Plan on a daylight pickup
Here’s a rule worth knowing. In the village’s residential districts, commercial vehicles may not load or unload at an address between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. (moving vans are the exception). A tow truck hauling away a car is a commercial vehicle, so house pickups in Mount Prospect belong in daytime hours.
In practice that’s easy to plan around. Call in the morning with the car’s details, and an afternoon pickup the same day is often possible. You pay nothing for the tow, and your payment comes at pickup.
Stickers and title
Mount Prospect dropped its vehicle sticker in January 2024, so there’s nothing to cancel with the village. For the sale itself, the title is what we hope you have. No title? Start by checking for a registration card, an insurance card or an earlier bill of sale, and have your license ready. Illinois law, not us, decides which combination works for scrapping, and we sort that out by phone before booking.

Neighbors we also serve
Mount Prospect sits between Arlington Heights on the west and Des Plaines on the east, with Prospect Heights to the north. Between 2 and 6 a.m. no car may park on any village street, so keep the car on your driveway until pickup. Our locations directory lists the rest of our service area.
Selling a car in Mount Prospect: common questions
Can you pick up my junk car in Mount Prospect after work, in the evening?
For homes in residential districts, plan on daytime. Section 23.1403.1 restricts commercial vehicles from loading or unloading at residential addresses between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. We'll find a daytime slot, and same-day pickup is often possible.
Do I need to return a Mount Prospect vehicle sticker when I junk my car?
No. The village repealed its vehicle license chapter in January 2024, so there's no village sticker to return or cancel.
Is a car I'm not driving a violation if it's in my own driveway?
It can be. The nuisance rule covers any vehicle not in operating condition or current use on private yards as well as streets, and a notice gives 14 days to fix it. If repair isn't worth it, a free tow ends the problem.
