No for-sale sign, no long wait
Wheeling has a rule worth knowing before you try to sell an old car the usual way. Under § 9.10.118, you can’t park a car to show it for sale on a street or on private property, and only dealers holding a license are exempt. So the classic sign in the rear window, parked on your own driveway, isn’t allowed here.
For a car that’s past fixing, that doesn’t matter much. A junk buyer doesn’t need a sign. Call us with the details, take the offer if it works, and the truck comes at no cost to you, with payment at pickup.
72 hours for a wrecked or rusted car
The village’s junk-vehicle rule is short and wide. Under § 9.16.101, a vehicle that is abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, inoperative, rusted or junked can’t remain outdoors, on public land or private, beyond 72 hours unless it’s kept inside a building. The word “rusted” is in the ordinance itself, which matters after a few salted Chicago winters.
Enforcement starts with a written notice at least 7 days before the deadline, and the owner or occupant can ask for a hearing before the police chief. If nothing changes, police can tow at the owner’s or occupant’s expense. A separate section bars keeping a car on a lot or driveway without current Illinois registration.
Condo lots and apartment parking
Only about 27% of Wheeling homes are detached houses; more than half are in buildings of two or more units, and another 16% are attached townhomes. So a junk car here may well be sitting in a shared lot.
For a lot pickup, tell us the building, the space and whether there’s a gate or garage height limit. A title in hand keeps things simple. If it’s gone, mention any registration, insurance or bill-of-sale paperwork in your name; whether Illinois lets you scrap the car with those is something we settle on the phone, not at the curb. Torn between junking and a private sale? Our junk vs. sell vs. donate comparison can help you decide.

Street parking is off limits from 2 to 6 a.m. unless police approve, and after each 2-inch snowfall no car may park on the street for 8 hours. We also tow from Prospect Heights to the south and Northbrook to the east, plus every town in our service directory.
Selling a car in Wheeling: common questions
Can I put a for-sale sign on my old car in my Wheeling driveway?
No. Section 9.10.118 bans parking a vehicle on a street or on private property to display it for sale, unless you're a dealer holding a license. For a car that runs, that limits your private-sale options. For a junk car, selling to us skips the sign entirely: we quote, tow free and pay at pickup.
My Wheeling condo association says my car can't sit in the lot. How long do I have?
The village's own limit is 72 hours for a wrecked, rusted or inoperative vehicle on public or private property, and enforcement follows a written notice of at least 7 days. Your association's rules may be stricter. Call us and ask about a same-day slot.
Do you pick up near Chicago Executive Airport and Milwaukee Avenue?
Yes, anywhere in Wheeling. Give the exact address or lot location, tell us whether the car rolls, and let us know where the keys are. Our tow is free, and we pay you at pickup.
