Expired registration changes the picture
In some suburbs a dead car can sit at the curb for a day or two without trouble. Oak Lawn is different once the registration lapses. The village bars parking on any public street, alley or village lot without a current state plate and sticker, and its definition of an abandoned vehicle includes one that lacks a current annual license or tag.
The private-property rule is just as direct. An abandoned car on your own land is still a nuisance, an unlicensed vehicle that hasn’t moved for 7 days qualifies, and the police chief can order it removed after 7 days. For a car that hasn’t been registered in a while, the driveway is only a short-term spot.
Winter in Oak Lawn: odd days, even days
Oak Lawn’s snow rules are more involved than most. With an inch or more on the ground, residents park on the north or west side (even house numbers) on even-numbered dates and switch sides on odd dates, 6 a.m. to 3 a.m. Posted snow routes, 95th Street among them, must be clear after an inch, and a declared snow removal emergency bans all street parking for 24 hours or until plowing ends.
A car that won’t start can’t follow an alternate-side schedule. If yours is stuck at the curb during snow season, tell us when you call so we know the clock is running.
A big village with every kind of driveway
Oak Lawn had 58,362 residents at the 2020 Census, making it the 22nd-most-populous municipality in Illinois. Most homes are owner-occupied, and about 69% of units are in one-unit buildings, but nearly a quarter sit in buildings of five or more apartments. So pickups range from house driveways and garages to condo lots near the downtown Metra station on 95th Street. Wherever the car is, the tow is free.
Crash damage, paperwork and payment
Not every junk car is old. If an insurer has declared yours a total loss after a crash, our guide to handling a totaled car in Illinois explains salvage certificates and keeping a car the insurer has written off.
You’re paid at pickup. If the title is missing, tell us what you can show (registration, an earlier bill of sale, an insurance card, ID); the state’s rules determine which of those can be used to sell a car for scrap, and that’s something we settle during the call.
Around Oak Lawn we also buy cars in Burbank to the north, Evergreen Park to the east and Chicago Ridge to the southwest. The rest are on our service area list.
Selling a car in Oak Lawn: common questions
Can I leave a junk car with expired plates on an Oak Lawn street?
No. Under § 11-5-15, a vehicle needs a valid, current state plate and registration sticker to park on a public street, alley or village lot. A car with lapsed registration also fits the code's definition of abandoned, so keep it on your driveway or in the garage until pickup.
Does Oak Lawn still require a village vehicle sticker?
No. The vehicle-license chapter of the village code has been repealed, so there's no village sticker to buy, display or cancel when you sell a junk car. The state side still applies: your Illinois title and your license plates.
