Old cars, salt and the point where repair stops making sense

Evergreen Park is an older, fully built-out village. Its population peaked at 25,921 in 1970, and 88% of its housing units are single-unit homes, most with a driveway or garage. Cars here take the same beating every Chicago-area car takes: decades of winter salt. Once rust gets into the brake lines, rocker panels or frame, a repair estimate can quickly outrun the car’s value. Our guide on how road salt finishes off a car shows what to check before paying for a fix.

The 14-day line

The village rewrote its relocation-of-vehicles article in 2023. A car parked on private property in public view that hasn’t been drivable, safely or legally, for 14 days counts as inoperable, though finishing repairs within that window keeps you clear. A car that hasn’t moved for 14 straight days and sits under a cover is presumed inoperable, so a tarp doesn’t buy time.

Once police decide a car qualifies, the steps are formal: a window sticker, a certified letter, then 7 days to request a hearing. Getting a quote before any of that starts keeps the decision with you.

Sweeping, snow and the hospital blocks

If the car is parked on the street, three rules matter. During posted street sweeping the block must be empty, signs go up at least four hours ahead, and violators are towed at the owner’s expense. After 2 inches of snow in 24 hours, parking switches to alternate sides by house number, and board-designated snow routes are off limits. Around Little Company of Mary Hospital at 95th Street and California Avenue, parts of both streets are tow-away zones.

No sticker, but bring the state papers

Since February 2024 there’s no village vehicle sticker, so you have nothing to cancel at village hall. The Illinois paperwork remains. Have your title out if you have it; if you can’t find it, list the papers you do hold and we’ll go over by phone what Illinois accepts for a scrap sale. Payment is made at pickup, and the tow is on us.

To the west, we also serve Oak Lawn and Hometown, and to the south, Chicago’s Mount Greenwood. Browse every area we cover for the rest.

Selling a car in Evergreen Park: common questions

Do I need to deal with a village sticker when I sell my car in Evergreen Park?

No. Evergreen Park dropped its vehicle stickers in February 2024 under Ordinance 07-2024, so there's nothing to transfer or cancel with the village. State registration still applies, so think about your Illinois title and plates when you sell.

What happens if a dead car sits too long in an Evergreen Park driveway?

After 14 days in public view, a car that can't be driven safely or legally counts as inoperable under Sec. 13-276. Police can then post a tow notice on the window and mail a certified letter, and you have 7 days after the letter to ask for a hearing.
