No parting out in the driveway
Some owners plan to strip a dead car and sell the pieces. Alsip’s code makes that hard. A vehicle in major disassembly can stay on residential property for seven days at most, any car being repaired has to be registered to the owner or a family member, and nobody may offer an abandoned vehicle or its parts for sale in the open areas of private property unless that land is zoned and approved for it. Selling the car whole sidesteps all three.
The 7-day abandoned-vehicle rule
The village defines “abandoned” broadly: a vehicle without a current valid license, one that’s wrecked, dismantled, inoperative or junked, or one with parts removed for seven days so it can’t run. Every abandoned vehicle is a nuisance on public or private property. It can’t sit in public view for more than seven days, and in a residential district it has to be garaged. Seven days after a warning, police may enter the property and take it away, and the property owner pays for the removal.
Cars also can’t be parked on front, side or rear yards in residential districts. The street, a marked driveway or a garage are the only legal spots.
Pickup on both sides of the channel
The Cal-Sag Channel cuts through Alsip; most of the village sits north of it, with the Chippewa Ridge subdivision to the southwest. Housing is a mix: about 54% detached houses and a third of units in buildings of five or more. Wherever the car is parked, we tow it without charge.
Street rules are lighter than in some neighbors. There’s no village-wide overnight ban, but primary snow routes clear after an inch of snow, other streets after three inches, and signed blocks clear for street sweeping. Shopping-center and industrial lots that have signed up with the village bar overnight parking without the owner’s decal.
Papers and payment
We pay at pickup. Without a title, tell us what ownership documents you still have, along with your ID; whether those meet Illinois rules for a scrap sale is something we work out with you by phone. For the state-level rules, see our guide on junking a car with no title in Illinois.
Just south, we also serve Crestwood; to the west, Worth; and to the east, Merrionette Park. Every other community is on our town directory.
Selling a car in Alsip: common questions
Can I part out my junk car in my Alsip driveway and sell the pieces?
Not in the open. § 19-47 bars offering an abandoned vehicle or its parts for sale in open areas of private property unless the land is zoned and approved for it, and § 19-46 caps major disassembly on residential property at 7 days. Selling the car whole avoids both problems.
Does Alsip ban parking overnight?
Not village-wide; the night-parking sections were repealed in 2001. Snow rules still apply. Primary snow routes must stay clear for 12 hours after an inch or more falls, and other streets for 24 hours after 3 inches or more. Some commercial lots also bar overnight parking without a decal.
