The ten-day notice window
Crestwood handles dead cars through its nuisance code. Any inoperable car left where the public can see it, whether on a street or private land, is a public nuisance, and “inoperable” covers a car that hasn’t run for a week or longer because its engine, wheels or other parts were taken out, changed or damaged. Short repairs lasting up to three straight days are exempt, as are cars kept indoors.
When the village acts, the car gets a notice of impending tow from police or Code Enforcement, and it’s put on the tow schedule for the 10th day after. That window is long enough to sell the car first, and selling means you’re paid rather than billed.
Condos, apartments and older owners
More than half of Crestwood’s housing units are in buildings of five or more units, and the village skews older: the 2020 median age was 48.5, with about a quarter of residents 65 or older. So the car in question may well sit in a condo or apartment lot, or in a garage after its owner stopped driving. For a shared lot, tell us the building, the space number and any rules for tow trucks. The tow is free.
Street and yard rules
Nothing may park on a Crestwood street between 2 and 6 a.m., and only passenger cars with seven seats or fewer may stay on village streets beyond loading time, so a dead work van can’t wait at the curb. Once snow on the street goes past an inch, parking is cut to quick stops while snow falls and for eight hours after it ends, longer if plowing isn’t finished. Cars can’t be parked on grass or gravel anywhere in a yard setback, and the code also bars parking on the street to show a car for sale.
Winters are hard on cars here, as everywhere around Chicago. Our guide on road salt rust and when it ends a car’s life explains the warning signs.
Papers, payment and nearby towns
Payment happens at pickup. A title in hand is easiest; otherwise, tell us what you have and we’ll check it against what Illinois accepts for scrapping. Residents also need a village vehicle license to use a car on village streets, one more cost a dead car doesn’t need.
The 127th Street bridge carries traffic over the Cal-Sag Channel inside the village, and Cicero Avenue carries IL-50 and IL-83 together here. We also buy cars in Alsip to the north, Midlothian and Oak Forest to the south; browse the complete location list for others.
Selling a car in Crestwood: common questions
How much warning does Crestwood give before towing an inoperable car?
A notice of impending tow comes first, from police or Code Enforcement. The tow itself follows on day 10. Selling the car during that window means you get paid for it instead of paying to get it back from a tow yard.
Can I fix my own car in my Crestwood driveway?
For a short while. Owner repairs outside a building are limited to 3 consecutive days, and parking any vehicle on grass or gravel in a front, side or rear setback is prohibited. If the job turns into a long project, selling the car may be the simpler path.
