Seven days, then a warning

Oak Forest’s abandoned-vehicle section casts a wide net. A car qualifies if it has no current valid license, if it’s wrecked or dismantled or simply doesn’t work, or if it hasn’t moved in seven days, and every such car is a nuisance whether it sits on public or private land. It’s unlawful to leave one in public view for over seven days, and a car that’s been heavily taken apart can’t stay on a residential lot beyond seven days either.

Once police give a warning, they can haul the car off seven days later, with the bill going to the property owner. An unregistered car in a residential district has to be garaged. There’s no gray area.

Trucks, vans and the 8,000-pound line

We buy junk pickups and vans as readily as cars, which matters here because of § 73.09. Vehicles over 8,000 pounds, meaning Class D plates and up, can’t park on residential property or streets except in a garage, carport or surfaced parking space, and commercial vehicles may park on streets only while loading or doing business. A dead box van left on the street outside a house is out of bounds from day one.

Parkways, sidewalks and snow

The city also cares where a car sits around the house. Parking on a parkway, or anywhere between the house and the roadway, is barred, with an exception for the 12 hours after a 2-inch snowfall. A car can’t block the sidewalk from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Once 2 or more inches of snow fall, cars have to stay off the streets for 12 hours unless the street has already been plowed, and police can move cars that block the plows.

Our tow truck works from the driveway, the garage or the curb, and the towing is free.

Papers, payment and landmarks

You’re paid at pickup. If the title has disappeared, run through your remaining documents with us; Illinois rules decide which ones a scrap sale can rely on, and we confirm that during the call. For a car that won’t start at all, the guide to selling a non-running car covers missing keys and what to tell a buyer.

Central Avenue is the city’s main street, home to City Hall, the police and fire stations and the library, and Rock Island trains stop at 159th Street and Cicero Avenue. We also buy cars in Midlothian, Crestwood and Tinley Park; all are on our pickup area list.

Selling a car in Oak Forest: common questions

Can I keep a dead heavy-duty pickup at my Oak Forest house?

Only in the right spot. A vehicle over 8,000 pounds (Class D plates and up) may sit on residential property only in a garage, carport or surfaced parking space, and not on residential streets. We buy trucks as well as cars, and the tow is free.

Do I need an Oak Forest city sticker on a junk car?

The city requires every vehicle housed in Oak Forest to be registered and to display a current city sticker, valid July 1 to June 30. Separately, § 132.11 says unregistered vehicles in residential districts have to be garaged, so a dead car out front draws attention twice.
