Selling privately is harder in Worth
The usual first idea for an old car is a sign in the window and a spot by the road. Worth’s code shuts that down: you can’t park on any street to show a vehicle for sale, and you can’t leave a for-sale vehicle on an unlicensed commercial lot either. For a car that doesn’t run, a private sale then depends on strangers coming to your driveway. If you’re weighing options, our guide to junking, selling or donating a car sets them side by side.
The 7-day and 30-day rules
Worth’s inoperable-vehicle chapter is precise. A car whose engine, wheels or other parts have been removed or altered so it can’t move under its own power for 7 days or more is inoperable. Ordinary repairs are allowed, but the work has to advance weekly and the car must be operating in 30 days.
If an inoperable car sits on private property in public view, the village mails a certified notice giving 7 days to remove it. Next comes a citation, then adjudication, and last a court warrant ordering removal. A car abandoned on a street gets even less time: police can order it towed after 10 hours.
Snow, alleys and apartment lots
Once 2 inches of snow have fallen, every village street must be free of parked or standing cars until it’s cleared. Alleys are for loading and unloading only, with 10 feet kept clear. And with nearly 40% of housing units in buildings of five or more units, many cars here sit in apartment or condo lots, which owners must plow no later than 24 hours after a 2-inch snowfall. A dead car in the way of the plow makes nobody happy.
Our tow truck works from wherever the car is parked, and the tow is free.
Papers, payment and nearby towns
You’re paid at pickup. Keep the title ready. Without it, list whatever ownership papers remain, and during the call we’ll say what Illinois accepts for a scrap sale.
Worth has its own Metra SouthWest Service station, and Southwest Highway (IL-7) ends at Harlem Avenue inside the village. We also buy cars next door in Chicago Ridge, Palos Heights and Alsip; the full list of our service towns covers the rest of the southwest suburbs.
Selling a car in Worth: common questions
Can I put a for-sale sign on my junk car and park it on a Worth street?
No. Worth's code bars parking on any street to display a vehicle for sale, and it also bars for-sale vehicles on unlicensed commercial lots. That makes a private sale harder for a non-runner, which is one reason people in Worth choose a junk buyer instead.
How long can I work on a broken car in my Worth driveway?
Under 10-9-1, ordinary repairs have to move forward every week and the car must be running in 30 days. A car that can't move under its own power for 7 days or more is inoperable, and one in public view can draw a certified notice giving you 7 days to remove it.
