Resident-only streets and a tow without notice

Steger has a rule worth knowing before you leave a car at the curb: whole streets where parking is reserved for cars with a current village resident sticker. Section 82-486 covers Kings Road, William Street, John Street, Sally Drive, Jennifer Court, Ashland Avenue from 35th Street to Richton Road, and parts of 35th Street and Susan Lane. Royal Oak Drive and Court are covered overnight.

On those blocks, a car without a sticker can be towed with no warning. If you stopped buying a sticker for the car that died last winter, it can’t wait at the curb there.

Elsewhere, the public-way rule is short. Under § 82-571, a car on the street counts as abandoned if it’s undrivable, or if it has sat 24 hours and looks deserted. The village then gives pre-tow notice by personal delivery or certified mail, and you have seven days from mailing to ask for a hearing.

Rural lots, county lines and wet spots

Steger is two towns in one. Chicago Road (IL-1) crosses from Cook into Will County inside the village, and a 2024 county hazard plan, working from 2010 figures, describes about half the village’s land as rural, on wells and septic. So a dead car here may sit on a long drive or behind an outbuilding instead of at a curb.

That’s fine for a pickup if we know the layout. Tell us the distance from the road, the surface, and whether the car rolls. Low spots flood in heavy rain, especially on the northwest side around 33rd Street near Holman and Lewis, and on the south side near 35th Street and Susan Lane, so soft ground after a storm is worth mentioning.

On a lot that stores wrecked or derelict vehicles, § 50-61 calls for a solid 6 to 8 foot fence. Selling the car avoids the question.

Papers, payment and nearby towns

Look out the title, registration, any bill of sale and your ID. Illinois rules decide which of them can transfer a car for scrap; we sort out your case when you call. We tow free and pay you at pickup.

If rust is what finished your car, our guide on road salt and rust explains when repair stops making sense. We also pick up in South Chicago Heights, Sauk Village and University Park, and across our other service towns.

Selling a car in Steger: common questions

Which Steger streets are resident-sticker only?

Section 82-486 lists Kings Road, William Street, Ashland Avenue from 35th Street to Richton Road, John Street, Sally Drive, Jennifer Court, and parts of 35th Street and Susan Lane. Royal Oak Drive and Court are covered from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Cars without the sticker can be towed without notice.

Does it matter whether my Steger address is in Cook or Will County?

Not for selling to us. We pick up on both sides of the county line, and title paperwork follows Illinois state rules either way. Tell us what documents you have and we'll confirm what works for a scrap sale.

Can you pick up from a gravel drive or a back lot?

Generally, if a tow truck can reach the car on firm ground. Parts of the village are still rural, so tell us how long the drive is, what the surface is, and whether the car rolls, and the driver will come prepared.
