Known Nissan problems that end up at the scrapyard

CVT failures in 2012-2019 Altima, Sentra and Versa

Nissan settled three class actions over continuously variable transmissions in 2012-2017 Versas, 2014-2017 Versa Notes, 2013-2017 Sentras and 2013-2016 Altimas, and a later case extended coverage on 2017-2018 Altimas and 2018-2019 Sentras and Versas. Those extensions have run out on most cars. A replacement CVT often costs more than an older Nissan is worth, which is why many are junked. source

Takata do-not-drive warning: 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder

In 2024 Nissan urged owners of about 84,000 unrepaired vehicles (certain 2002-2006 Sentras, 2002-2004 Pathfinders and 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4s) to stop driving because the Takata air bag inflators can explode. A death in a 2006 Sentra was reported in 2018. Nissan replaces the inflator free; an unrepaired car should be towed, not driven. source

Broken front coil springs on 2007-2012 Versa

Recall 15V573000 covers about 218,000 Versas sold or registered in salt states, Illinois included. Road salt can corrode the front coil springs until one fractures and contacts the tire, possibly puncturing it. A Versa that suddenly sits low on one front corner, or clunks over bumps, should be inspected before it's driven again. source

Why Nissans reach Chicago scrapyards early

Two things retire most Nissans: the CVT and the salt. The continuously variable transmission arrived across Nissan’s lineup in the 2000s and 2010s, and the class settlements that followed tell you how many failed. A shuddering, whining or slipping CVT on a car with 120,000 miles usually means a replacement unit, not a small repair.

Salt shows up in Nissan’s recall history again and again, and the recalls limited to salt states all name Illinois. First-generation Versas had front coil springs that rust and snap. 1996-2004 Pathfinders had strut housings that could corrode and crack. The 2005-2009 Frontier, Xterra and Pathfinder had crash-zone sensors that could rust internally and keep the front airbags from firing. Rogues from 2008 to 2016 were recalled twice because slush tracked onto the driver’s floor reached a wiring connector. Our guide to road salt damage on Chicago cars covers what to check underneath.

Fix, sell or junk?

Start with the VIN. Open recalls (Takata, coil springs, the Rogue connector) are repaired by Nissan dealers at no charge, and a Takata do-not-drive car should be towed to the dealer, not driven. If the free repair keeps the car useful, take it.

If it doesn’t, because the CVT is gone or the frame and floor are rotten, a junk sale is usually the cleanest exit. A dead car doesn’t need to start for us; we tow it from the driveway, alley or street, and a missing key or a flat tire just needs a mention when you call.

Pickup checklist

Leave all keys and Intelligent Keys in the car, remove your NissanConnect account link, take your I-PASS and garage opener, and tell us which papers you have. Illinois rules decide which documents work for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the call. Other makes are on our brands we buy page.

Selling a junk Nissan: questions

My Altima's CVT is slipping. Should I fix it or sell it?

Get a written estimate first, then compare it with what the car is worth running. On a high-mileage Altima, Sentra or Rogue whose extended CVT coverage has expired, a transmission replacement often exceeds the car's value. If it does, we'll buy it with the bad transmission and tow it free.

How do I take my Nissan off NissanConnect?

Sign in to the NissanConnect app or your Nissan owner account, remove the vehicle and cancel any subscription. Then use the car's settings menu to delete paired phones, contacts and saved locations before pickup.
