Known Mazda problems that end up at the scrapyard

Front cross member rot on 2011-2013 Mazda6

Recall 19V323000 covers 2011-2013 Mazda6s sold or registered in salt states, Illinois among them. The front cross member can corrode from road salt, weakening the mount for the passenger-side lower control arm and suddenly changing the alignment. On a car this age, cross member rot usually travels with rusted rockers and brake lines. source

Spider webs that can crack the fuel tank (2010-2012 Mazda6 2.5L)

Mazda found a type of spider could build a web inside the evaporative canister vent line. The blocked line lets negative pressure build in the tank, and repeated purging can crack it, leaking fuel. The fix reprograms the engine computer and cleans the line, replacing the tank if a web is found. A fuel smell on one of these cars means stop and check. source

Takata inflators in 2003-2008 Mazda6 and the MPV

Recall 18V402000 covers about 308,000 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 and 2004 MPV vehicles nationwide, plus 2005-2006 MPVs in many states including Illinois. The passenger inflator can explode and throw metal fragments. The repair is free, so check the VIN; a car with this recall open shouldn't be driven to a sale. source

Worn rotary engines in the RX-8

In 2008 Mazda announced 8-year/100,000-mile coverage for the RX-8's 1.3-liter Renesis rotary core, rotor housings and internal seals, and extended it retroactively to 2004-2008 owners who'd had service issues. Every car has outrun that coverage now. An RX-8 with low compression or hard hot starts usually needs a rebuild, and many are sold instead. source

What finishes off a Mazda in Chicago

Mazdas drive well and rust easily, and Chicago is hard on that combination. Mazda has issued salt-state-only recalls for corrosion on three separate models: the 2001-2004 Tribute (lower control arm mount), the 2007-2012 CX-7 (front ball joints) and the 2011-2013 Mazda6 (front cross member). Each of those recalls exists because Mazda accepted that salt water reaches places the factory coating didn’t protect well enough. When rust reaches suspension mounts, a repair shop has to cut and weld, and that is often more than the car is worth.

Mechanical endings are more model-specific. An RX-8 with tired rotor seals, a turbocharged CX-7 that needs a turbo or engine work, or a Mazda6 with a slipping automatic will each run up a bill that a high-mileage car can’t justify. If you’re weighing a fix against selling, read selling a car that doesn’t run for the options.

A quick salt-belt check before you spend money

Recall repairs are done at no charge by Mazda dealers. Before you approve a big repair on an older Mazda:

  1. Enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup and note any open campaigns.
  2. Look under the front of the car at the cross member and control arm mounts. Flaking, swollen metal is a bad sign.
  3. Check the brake lines along the floor pan for crusty rust or wet spots.
  4. If a recall is open, have it done and ask the dealer what they saw underneath before you pay for anything else.

If the answer is that the structure is gone, the car is a junk car, and that’s fine. We buy it as it sits.

What helps when you call us about a Mazda

We don’t quote numbers online, but the details that move an offer are simple: the model and engine, whether it starts and drives, missing parts (wheels, catalytic converter, battery), and how badly rust has reached the structure. A rotary RX-8 with a fresh engine is a very different car from one with a dead one, so say so.

Before pickup, clear phones and addresses from the infotainment system, take your I-PASS off the glass, and leave all keys. For paperwork, tell us what you have; Illinois rules decide what works for a scrap sale and we confirm it on the call. Other makes are on our list of brands we buy.

Selling a junk Mazda: questions

Do you buy an RX-8 that won't start?

Yes. A non-starting RX-8 is still a complete car with resalable parts, and we tow it free from wherever it sits. Tell us whether it cranks, if the engine was ever rebuilt, and whether the car has accident damage. That helps us price it accurately.

How do I disconnect my Mazda from the MyMazda app?

On newer Mazdas with connected services, sign in to the MyMazda app, remove the vehicle and stop any remote-start or tracking features tied to your account. Then reset the infotainment system to clear paired phones and saved locations before we arrive.
