Known Mercedes-Benz problems that end up at the scrapyard

Sensotronic Brake Control on 2003-2006 E-Class

Mercedes recalled about 680,000 SBC-equipped vehicles in 2004 and 1.3 million in 2005 over this electro-hydraulic brake system. In 2018 it extended coverage on the SBC hydraulic unit, pump, pressure reservoir, brake operating unit and related sensors to 25 years with no mileage limit. Before junking a W211 for an SBC fault, ask a dealer about that coverage. source

BlueTEC diesel emissions defeat devices (2009-2016)

EPA alleged that about 250,000 Mercedes diesel cars and Sprinter vans from 2009-2016 carried undisclosed software and defeat devices. The 2020 settlement required recalls with software and hardware updates and an extended warranty on affected parts. A BlueTEC that never received the update, or now has emissions faults, can be expensive to keep legal and running. source

Takata passenger inflators in 2008 C-Class sedans

Recall 16V363000 covers about 258,000 vehicles. In Illinois and the other Zone B states it applies to 2008 C300, C350, C63 AMG and C300 4Matic sedans, while hot-humid Zone A states also include later C-Class, GLK and E-Class models. The inflator can rupture in a crash. Check the VIN; the repair is free. source

The Mercedes repair-or-sell moment

A high-mileage Mercedes usually tells you when it’s time. The car still drives, but the estimate for air suspension, a transmission, a diesel emissions fault or a chain of electrical modules is more than the car is worth. Chicago adds rust: brake lines, subframes, rocker panels and wheel arches on cars that spent 15 winters in salt.

Two documented issues matter most on older models. The 2003-2006 E-Class used Sensotronic Brake Control, an electro-hydraulic system that was recalled twice and later given 25-year parts coverage. And the BlueTEC diesels of 2009-2016, from the ML and GL to the GLK and E-Class, were part of a 2020 federal emissions settlement. Both are worth checking with a dealer before you write the car off, because one may be covered.

If the dealer says no, the decision gets simpler. A Mercedes with a failed brake unit, a diesel that won’t pass emissions or a gearbox that slips is still a complete, heavy car with parts other owners need, and we buy it in that state. You don’t have to fix the warning lights first.

What affects an offer on a junk Mercedes

We don’t publish numbers. The facts that change an offer are model and engine, whether it starts and moves, completeness (wheels, catalytic converters, headlamps, COMAND or MBUX screens), and damage from rust, flood or collision. Diesel or gas makes a difference too. For more, read how junk car offers are calculated.

Pickup checklist for a Mercedes

  1. Remove the car from Mercedes me (or cancel mbrace on older models).
  2. Reset the infotainment system and HomeLink buttons.
  3. Leave every key; Mercedes smart keys are coded to the car.
  4. Take your I-PASS, parking permits and anything in the trunk well.
  5. Tell us which papers you have. Illinois rules decide which work for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the call.

Other makes are on our brands we buy page.

Selling a junk Mercedes-Benz: questions

My W211 E-Class shows a brake system warning. Is it junk?

Not necessarily. Mercedes extended coverage on the Sensotronic Brake Control parts to 25 years from the original warranty start, so ask a dealer whether the fault is covered. If the car has other expensive problems, we'll buy it with the warning light on and tow it free.

What should I do with Mercedes me connect before selling?

Sign in to the Mercedes me app or website, remove the vehicle from your account and cancel connected services; older cars may have mbrace instead. Then reset COMAND or MBUX to clear phones, addresses and garage door codes.
