Known Land Rover problems that end up at the scrapyard

Cracking fuel outlet flange on 2010-2013 Range Rover Sport and 2010-2016 LR4

Recall 21V635000 covers about 112,000 SUVs with the 3.0-liter V6 or 5.0-liter V8. The fuel outlet flange on top of the tank may crack, leaking fuel that can ignite. A Range Rover Sport or LR4 with a fuel smell after filling up shouldn't be parked in an attached garage until the recall is confirmed done. source

Doors that unlatch on 2013-2016 Range Rover and 2014-2016 Range Rover Sport

Recall 15V385000 covered about 65,000 vehicles whose doors could unlatch unexpectedly when closed. A later recall, 19V392000, found the keyless latching system could make doors appear shut while unlatched, and 20V387000 re-recalled cars whose earlier repair may not have been done properly. A door that won't stay latched can make an otherwise good SUV hard to sell privately. source

Airbag wiring fractures on 2005-2006 LR3 and Range Rover Sport

Recall 08V248000 covered about 37,000 early LR3s and Range Rover Sports. Movement between the steering wheel hub or column cowl and the clockspring could fracture the driver airbag wiring, lighting the SRS warning and possibly causing the airbag not to deploy as intended. On an LR3 that's now 20 years old, an SRS light is one more item on a long list. source

Big SUVs, big repair bills

Land Rovers are expensive to keep once they’re out of warranty, and that’s the main reason they reach a junk buyer while they still look impressive. A typical older LR3, LR4 or Range Rover Sport collects a list: air suspension parts, a coolant or oil leak, electrical faults, brakes, and sooner or later a major engine or transmission job. Any one of those can be more than the vehicle’s private-sale value.

Then add the recalls. The 2010-2013 Range Rover Sport and 2010-2016 LR4 have a fuel flange that can crack. The 2013-2016 Range Rover and 2014-2016 Range Rover Sport had a door latch problem that took three recalls to work through. Early LR3s had airbag wiring that could fracture. Check the VIN at NHTSA before spending money on anything else.

Chicago winters and body-on-frame SUVs

The LR3 and LR4 ride on a separate frame, and years of Chicago salt work on that frame, the brake lines and the suspension mounts. Our guide to road salt and rust shows how to judge whether the rust underneath is cosmetic or structural. If it’s structural, the SUV is a junk car regardless of how good the leather looks.

A Land Rover that can’t hold its ride height or won’t start is still something we pick up. Tell us whether it sits level, whether the parking brake releases, and whether it’s in a garage, driveway or alley spot. Those answers decide what equipment the driver brings, and towing stays free either way.

What helps your offer

Weight is on your side with a Land Rover, and completeness matters too: wheels, catalytic converters, headlamps, seats and the infotainment screen. Tell us honestly if it runs, whether the suspension holds height, and whether any panels are missing. For paperwork, tell us which papers you have; Illinois rules decide which ones work for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the call. Other brands are on our junk car makes page.

Selling a junk Land Rover: questions

My LR3's air suspension failed and it sits on the bump stops. Can you tow it?

Yes. A Land Rover that's sagging or stuck at its lowest height can still be loaded; just tell us so the driver comes prepared. We tow it at no charge and buy it as it is, whether the fault is the compressor, a bag or the electronics.

How do I remove my Land Rover from InControl?

Sign in to the Land Rover Remote or InControl app, remove the vehicle and cancel any connected-services subscription. Then reset the touchscreen to factory settings to delete phones, contacts and saved destinations, and leave every smart key with the car.
