Volkswagen models we see most
| Model | US model years | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Jetta | 1980-present | 2009-2014 Jetta TDIs were in the 2.0-liter diesel buyback; 2008-2010 and 2012-2014 Jettas with the EA888 2.0T were in the timing chain settlement. |
| Golf and GTI | 1985-present | 2008-2012 GTIs with the EA888 2.0T were covered by the timing chain tensioner class settlement. |
| Passat | 1990-2022 | 2012-2014 Passat TDIs were in the diesel buyback and in recall 16V171000 for a sensor connector that water can corrode. |
| New Beetle | 1998-2010 | 2006-2010 2.5-liter New Beetles were recalled (10V621000) because a power steering hose clamp could chafe a fuel line. |
| Beetle | 2012-2019 | 2013-2014 Beetle TDIs were in the diesel buyback; 2012-2014 Beetles with the 2.0T were in the timing chain settlement. |
| CC | 2009-2017 | 2009-2012 CCs with the 2.0T are among the timing chain tensioner settlement vehicles. |
| Eos | 2007-2016 | 2009-2012 Eos convertibles are also in the timing chain tensioner settlement. |
Known Volkswagen problems that end up at the scrapyard
Timing chain tensioner failures in the EA888 2.0T
A settlement reached in 2018 covered VW and Audi 2.0T engines whose timing chain tensioners could fail, including 2008-2012 GTIs, 2009-2012 CCs and Eos, 2012-2014 Beetles and many Jettas. When a tensioner lets the chain jump, valves and pistons can collide. A Jetta or GTI with a destroyed engine is a common junk car, because a replacement engine costs more than the car. source
The diesel emissions buyback (2009-2015 2.0 TDI)
The EPA settlement covered about 590,000 VW Group diesels. Owners of 2.0-liter TDIs, including 2009-2014 Jettas, 2010-2014 Golfs, 2012-2014 Passats and 2015 models, could choose a buyback or an emissions modification, with the buyback option open for two years. Modified TDIs still on the road are now ordinary high-mileage used diesels. source
Water-damaged sensor connector on 2012-2014 Passat TDI
Recall 16V171000 covers about 91,000 Passat TDIs because poorly assembled seals let water into a connector for an underbody sensor. The corroded connector can short, overheat and start a fire. On a Chicago car that has lived through salty slush, check the recall by VIN and look for melted wiring underneath before the car goes back into a garage. source
The two VW failures that end most cars here
German engineering and Chicago winters meet in a predictable place. Rust ends some Volkswagens, but the documented patterns in court and EPA records are mechanical, and two stand out.
The first is the EA888 2.0T timing chain. Class settlements covered 2008-2014 Volkswagens and 2008-2015 Audis with this engine because the tensioner could let the chain slip. If it jumps, the engine is usually ruined, and a used or rebuilt engine plus labor quickly exceeds what an older Jetta, GTI or CC is worth. If you hear a rattle from the engine on a cold start, have the chain checked before you put more money into a car you plan to keep.
The second is diesel. The 2.0 and 3.0 TDI buybacks took many cars off the road, but plenty were modified and kept. They’re now 10 to 17 years old, and an aging diesel with emissions hardware problems can be expensive to keep legal and running.
Electrical gremlins and water
Water is behind some VW electrical faults. The 2012-2014 Passat TDI recall for a corroding underbody connector is one documented case. On any older car, a clogged sunroof drain or a tired door seal can also soak carpets, wiring and the control modules that sit under them. If your VW has a damp carpet and a dashboard full of warnings, get the repair estimate in writing and compare it with the car’s value.

Pickup day for a Volkswagen
Leave every key; many VWs have a folding key that also operates the alarm. Remove the car from Car-Net, pull your I-PASS and garage opener, and clear the trunk and spare well. Tell us which papers you have. Illinois rules decide what works for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the call. More makes are on our brands page.
Selling a junk Volkswagen: questions
My GTI's timing chain jumped and the engine won't run. Do you buy it?
Yes. A VW with internal engine damage is still a complete car with a transmission, body panels, wheels and interior. Tell us the year, mileage and whether it cranks, and we'll make an offer and tow it at no charge.
How do I remove my VW from Car-Net?
Open the myVW app or sign in to your VW account, remove the vehicle as primary user and cancel any Car-Net plan. Then reset the infotainment unit to factory settings to erase phones, contacts and saved addresses.
