Fiat models we see most
| Model | US model years | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | 2012-2019 | Fiat's return model, built in Toluca, Mexico; 2012-2016 manuals are in clutch spring recall 16V302000. |
| 500L | 2014-2020 | 2014 models were recalled because the shifter might not select a gear in some temperatures (14V103000). |
| 500X | 2016-2023 | Fiat's small crossover; it left the US market at the end of the 2023 model year. |
| 124 Spider | 2017-2020 | A two-seat roadster Fiat dropped from the US lineup after 2020, along with the 500L. |
| 500e | 2013-2019, 2024-present | 2013-2016 cars are in recall 16V303000 for power inverter voltage spikes that cut propulsion. |
Known Fiat problems that end up at the scrapyard
Clutch diaphragm spring fracture on 2012-2016 Fiat 500 manuals
Recall 16V302000 covers Fiat 500s built from June 2010 to January 2016 with a manual transmission. The clutch diaphragm spring can fracture, leaving the driver unable to shift or losing drive altogether. A 500 that suddenly won't go into gear may have this failure, and on an older car with other issues, the clutch job is often where owners decide to sell. source
Delayed or missed gear selection on the 2014 500L
Chrysler recalled 2014 Fiat 500Ls built from April 2013 to January 2014 because, in certain temperatures, moving the shift lever could have a delayed effect or none at all (14V103000). The car might not leave park, or might move in an unexpected direction. A separate 2017 recall (17V192000) fixed 2014 cars whose engine software could hold them at idle power even with the pedal floored. source
Inverter faults that strand the first-generation 500e
Recall 16V303000 covers 2013-2016 Fiat 500e cars: the power inverter module can see voltage spikes that shut down propulsion. An earlier recall, 14V235000, addressed inverter cooling plates on 2013-2014 cars that could leak coolant into high-voltage circuitry and blow a fuse. With the original 500e long out of production, inverter and battery failures often end the car's useful life. source
Fiat’s short second act in America
Fiat came back to the US after a 25-year absence once it took a stake in Chrysler in 2009, starting with the 500 city car built in Toluca, Mexico. The lineup grew to the 500L, 500X, 124 Spider and the first 500e, then shrank again: the 500 ended in 2019, the 500L and 124 Spider in 2020, and the 500X after the 2023 model year.
That means every 500, 500L and 124 Spider is now at least six years old. Clutch, shifter and electrical problems tend to be what decide it. The manual 500 had a clutch spring recall, the 2014 500L had a shifter recall and a separate engine software recall, and the original 500e had two recalls for its power inverter.
Junk, sell or donate a Fiat?
A clean, running 500 or 500X may be worth listing privately. A car that needs a clutch or an inverter is a different calculation, because the repair can exceed what the car is worth once it’s done. An original 500e that no longer powers up is harder still to sell privately, since nobody can test-drive it. Our guide on whether to junk, sell or donate a car in Chicago walks through that math, including the paperwork for a donation.
When you call for a junk offer, we’ll ask which model it is, whether it starts and moves, what’s damaged, and whether it still has its catalytic converter and wheels. Fiats are light, so completeness carries more weight in the offer than it would on a full-size truck.
Before pickup: Uconnect and keys
If your Fiat has a Uconnect touchscreen, use its Clear Personal Data reset to remove paired phones and presets; on older radios, delete paired phones from the Bluetooth menu. Then take your toll transponder, garage remote and any parking permits. Hand over every key, including the spare. For a 500e, note the charge level and whether it powers on. Other makes are on our brand list.
Selling a junk Fiat: questions
Do you buy the electric Fiat 500e?
Yes. A 500e with a failed inverter, a weak battery or crash damage is still worth buying. Tell us whether it powers on and whether there's any damage near the battery, and leave the charging cord with the car if you have it.
Should I junk, sell or donate my Fiat?
If it runs well, a private sale may bring more. If it needs a clutch, transmission or electrical repair worth more than the car to you, junking it is simpler. Donation has its own tax rules, which our comparison guide explains.
