Jaguar models we see most
| Model | US model years | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| X-Type | 2002-2008 | Jaguar's all-wheel-drive compact sedan and wagon, built on the second-generation Ford Mondeo platform during Ford ownership. |
| S-Type | 2000-2008 | Shares Ford's DEW98 platform with the Lincoln LS; some 2005 S-Types were recalled (06V418000) for fuel tank seals that can leak. |
| XF (first generation) | 2009-2015 | 2010-2012 XF 5.0 V8s were recalled (12V521000) and 2010 4.2s later (20V081000) for fuel tank outlet flanges that can crack and leak. |
| XK | 2007-2015 | 2010 XKs and XFs were recalled (11V168000) because power steering pipes with substandard plating can corrode and leak. |
| I-Pace | 2019-2024 | 2019-2024 I-Paces were recalled (23V369000) because the high-voltage battery may overheat; owners were told to park outside. |
Known Jaguar problems that end up at the scrapyard
High-voltage battery overheating in the 2019-2024 I-Pace
Jaguar recalled I-Paces under 23V369000 because the high-voltage battery may overheat, increasing fire risk, and told owners to park outside. Follow-up recalls (including 23V709000 and 24V183000) covered cars whose earlier repair may not have worked. An I-Pace with an open battery recall should be parked outdoors and reported to us before pickup. source
Cracking fuel tank outlet flange on 2010-2012 XF
Recall 12V521000 covered 2010-2012 XF sedans with the 5.0-liter V8 whose fuel tank outlet flange may crack, leaking fuel onto the ground near possible ignition sources. A similar recall, 20V081000, later covered 2010 XFs with the 4.2-liter engine. Any older XF with a fuel smell should be parked and checked before it's driven again. source
Corroding power steering pipes on 2010 XF and XK
Recall 11V168000 covered about 4,900 2010 XKs and XFs whose power steering pipes had zinc-nickel plating that didn't meet Jaguar's corrosion specification. Over time the pipes can corrode and pin-hole, leaking pressurized fluid into the engine bay, losing assist and creating a fire risk. Salted Chicago roads make that corrosion more likely. source
How Jaguars end up as junk cars here
Jaguars depreciate quickly, and that’s what turns a repair into a sale. An X-Type or S-Type with 150,000 miles might still look elegant, but a transmission, a suspension rebuild, an all-wheel-drive component or a set of electrical faults can easily cost more than the car is worth. Ford-era Jaguars share a lot with Ford and Lincoln products of their time (the X-Type with the Mondeo, the S-Type with the Lincoln LS), which helps with parts but doesn’t change the math on a tired car.
Winter adds to the bill. A Jaguar that has been driven through Chicago’s salted streets for a decade tends to need brake lines, exhaust parts and suspension bushings at the same time as everything else, and the fasteners underneath come off hard. When a mechanic’s estimate lists a dozen items, that’s usually the moment to price the car as it sits.
Newer Jaguars bring different problems. The first-generation XF had fuel tank flange and power steering pipe recalls. The I-Pace, Jaguar’s electric SUV, went through a series of battery overheating recalls starting in 2023, with owners told to park outside and some cars recalled again when earlier repairs weren’t enough.
What we ask about a junk Jaguar
- Which model and engine (V6, V8, supercharged or electric)?
- Does it start, drive and shift? For an I-Pace, does it power on and charge?
- Is it complete: wheels, headlamps, catalytic converters, interior?
- Any rust? Chicago salt hits brake lines, subframes and suspension mounts.
- Where is it parked: driveway, garage, alley or street?
Our guide on how a junk car’s value is worked out explains why each answer matters.
Before pickup
Remove the car from your Jaguar account, leave every key and smart fob, and pull your I-PASS and garage remote. Tell us which papers you have; Illinois rules decide which ones work for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the call. Our makes we buy page lists other brands.
Selling a junk Jaguar: questions
Do you buy an I-Pace with an open battery recall?
Yes. Keep it parked outside as Jaguar instructed, and tell us the recall status, whether the car powers on and whether it has been in a collision. We'll plan the pickup around that, and we tow it at no charge.
How do I remove my Jaguar from InControl?
Sign in to the InControl or Jaguar Remote app and remove the vehicle from your account, cancelling any remote or connected-service subscription. Then reset the touchscreen to factory settings to erase phones, contacts and saved addresses.
