Lexus models we see most
| Model | US model years | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| ES | 1990-present | 2007-2008 ES 350s were in a Toyota service campaign replacing a rubber VVT-i oil hose that can degrade and leak. |
| RX | 1999-present | 2007-2009 RX 350s were in the same VVT-i oil hose campaign as the ES 350. |
| IS | 2001-present | 2006-2011 IS models are in recall 14V647000 for fuel seeping where the fuel pressure sensor meets the delivery pipe. |
| GS | 1993-2020 | 2006-2011 GS sedans share fuel-leak recall 14V647000 with the IS and LS. |
| LS | 1990-present | 2007-2010 LS sedans are also covered by recall 14V647000, a fire risk if the fuel leak meets an ignition source. |
| GX | 2003-present | 2004-2006 GX 470s were recalled (16V065000) because a misprogrammed module could fire the side curtain airbags unexpectedly. |
| SC 430 | 2002-2010 | 2002-2005 cars were recalled again (18V883000) because earlier like-for-like Takata replacement inflators can also degrade. |
Known Lexus problems that end up at the scrapyard
Takata passenger inflators in 2002-2005 SC 430
Recall 18V883000 replaces the front passenger airbag inflator on 2002-2005 SC 430s with a non-Takata part. Some of these cars already had a Takata unit swapped in an earlier recall, but that replacement was the same design and can still degrade with heat and humidity. A convertible that sat for years should have this checked by VIN before anyone drives it. source
Leaking VVT-i oil hose on 2007-2008 ES 350 and 2007-2009 RX 350
Toyota found that the rubber section of the oil supply hose to the VVT-i actuator on the 3.5-liter V6 can degrade, leak oil, make abnormal engine noise and light the oil pressure warning. Dealers replaced it with a redesigned hose. If yours was never done and the engine ran low on oil, the damage may already be internal. source
Fuel leaks on 2006-2011 IS and GS, 2007-2010 LS
Recall 14V647000 covered about 422,000 Lexus sedans because plating residue could let fuel leak where the pressure sensor attaches to the fuel delivery pipe, which is a fire risk. A raw-fuel smell under the hood of one of these cars is a reason to stop driving it and confirm the recall was completed. source
How a Lexus ends up with a junk buyer
Lexus engines routinely pass 250,000 miles, so the call to sell rarely starts with a dead motor. It starts with a repair quote. A tired transmission on an RX, a rear suspension or frame problem on a GX, a crashed IS that the insurer won’t fix, or a dozen small luxury-car items (power seats, infotainment screens, headlamps) that add up to more than a 17-year-old car is worth. Chicago winters speed this up: rocker panels, rear wheel arches and brake lines on older ES and RX models take the salt hard.
The parts that survive are often in demand, which is why a complete Lexus usually beats a stripped one. Keep the catalytic converters, wheels and interior in the car until it’s picked up. Our guide on how junk car offers are set explains the rest.
Three recall checks worth five minutes
Before you pay for a diagnosis, run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. On older Lexus models, three campaigns come up often:
- SC 430 (2002-2005): the second Takata passenger-inflator recall, 18V883000.
- ES 350 and RX 350: the VVT-i oil hose campaign. A leak here can drain the engine.
- IS, GS and LS: fuel-leak recall 14V647000 at the delivery pipe sensor.
Lexus dealers do recall repairs at no charge. If the car is finished either way, we buy it with the recall still open. Just tell us about it, especially the Takata one, so nobody drives the car and we tow it from where it sits.
Paperwork and the handoff
Tell us which documents you have when you call: title, registration, ID. Illinois rules decide which papers work for a scrap sale, and we’ll confirm before anyone drives out. Leave all keys and smart fobs in the car. Other makes we buy are on our junk car brands page.
Selling a junk Lexus: questions
Is a Lexus worth more to a junk buyer than a Toyota?
Sometimes, because a complete Lexus carries parts people look for, like leather interiors, headlamps and V6 or V8 engines. But weight, completeness, damage and whether it runs matter more than the badge. Tell us the model and condition and we'll give you an actual offer.
My GX 470 has frame rust. Do you still buy it?
Yes. Body-on-frame SUVs that spent years on salted Chicago streets often have scaly frames and rusted brake lines. We buy them in that condition and tow them free, even if the brakes or suspension make it unsafe to drive.
What should I clear out of a Lexus before pickup?
Remove the vehicle from the Lexus app and end any connected-services plan, then erase paired phones, saved addresses and HomeLink garage codes in the settings. Check the trunk well, glovebox and seat pockets, and pull your I-PASS transponder from the windshield.
