Step 1 of 2: the car

Dixmoor is small, about 1.25 square miles and under 3,000 residents, and it was once called Specialville. Interstate 57 runs through it, Sibley Boulevard (IL-83) crosses it, and Western Avenue ends here at Dixie Highway. Census estimates suggest roughly half the homes in the village are mobile homes, so plenty of junk cars here sit on a lot pad rather than a driveway.

The tightest clock in the area

Dixmoor’s village code is short on patience with dead cars. Abandoning a vehicle is prohibited outright. A wrecked or nonoperating vehicle can’t be left on a street. And on private property, such a vehicle may not stay more than 48 hours unless it’s inside an enclosed building. That’s two days, not two weeks.

There’s a separate nuisance route as well. A car counts as inoperable once parts have been removed or damaged for seven days or more, and a car “down for repairs” counts too if it isn’t fixed within 14 days of notice. Police can declare an inoperable vehicle in public view a nuisance and remove it seven days after the village’s notice, with a hearing offered first.

Streets are stricter still: police can tow any vehicle that has been parked on a public street for 24 hours straight.

Pickups on lots and side streets

If the car is on a mobile home lot, tell us the lot number and whether the park office needs notice before a tow truck comes in. For a car on a regular street, give us the cross street; local streets named in village records include Wood Street and 141st and 142nd Streets, near the Ashland Avenue and Thornton Road intersection.

Parking on sidewalks and parkways is banned, and after two inches of snow, street parking stops until plows clear the roads. A car in the plow path gets moved at the owner’s expense.

Papers for a Dixmoor scrap sale

Have your title ready if possible. If it isn’t, list what you have, for example a registration card, an insurance card, a bill of sale and a photo ID. The state’s rules, not ours, determine which of those papers can support a scrap sale, and we confirm it before booking the tow. Our guide on junking a car without a title in Illinois explains the options.

Your tow is free of charge, and the payment happens when we hook up the car. Dixmoor sits between Posen, Harvey and Blue Island, and we buy in all three. See our full coverage list for more.

Selling a car in Dixmoor: common questions

My car broke down on a Dixmoor street. How long can it stay there?

Not long. Dixmoor police may tow any vehicle parked on a public street for 24 consecutive hours, and wrecked or nonoperating vehicles aren't allowed on streets at all. Call us as soon as you know you're not fixing it, and tell us exactly where it's stopped.
