Step 1 of 2: the car

Posen fills just over a square mile between Blue Island, Harvey, Midlothian and Dixmoor, and the county’s hazard plan notes it has no vacant land left to annex. Most homes are detached houses (84.6%), so junk cars here usually sit on a driveway or at the curb on a residential block.

Ten days, then a notice

Posen’s chapter on junked or nonoperating vehicles applies to private premises. A partially dismantled, wrecked, junked, discarded or nonoperating vehicle that stays on private property more than 10 days is a nuisance. Exceptions cover vehicles in an enclosed building, ones not readily visible from public places or neighboring property, and non-residential businesses that hold a village license.

Once the 10 days pass, the chief of police can serve written notice to abate or request a hearing. If nothing happens, the village can remove the car and charge the cost, and that cost can become a lien on the property.

Street rules that catch dead cars

Posen streets are for passenger vehicles. Only private passenger cars seating seven or fewer can park beyond loading time, and nobody may park a vehicle on the street to display it for sale. Alleys need 16 feet of roadway kept clear.

Winter adds snow routes. For 12 hours after a two-inch snowfall, there’s no parking on 143rd through 149th Streets (146th on the north side only), on Sacramento between 149th and 150th, or on the west side of McKinley, Harrison and California until the curb is plowed. Violators can be towed to the village pound, and the owner pays towing plus daily storage.

Junk it, sell it or donate it

For a car that’s done, there are a few ways out: a private sale as-is, a donation, or a junk sale. Our comparison of junking, selling or donating a car walks through the trade-offs. A private buyer can’t leave the car on a Posen street with a “For Sale” sign, which pushes many owners toward scrap.

When you call us, give the year, make, model and location; I-57 and the Tri-State both have ramps at 147th Street, so the truck reaches Posen quickly. Have your title ready if possible. If it’s missing, tell us what you have, for instance the registration, a proof-of-insurance card, an old bill of sale and a state ID; whether they’re enough for a scrap sale depends on Illinois rules, and we’ll confirm it on the call. Free towing, paid at pickup.

We buy in neighboring Dixmoor, Midlothian and Blue Island as well. Every covered town is on our locations list.

Selling a car in Posen: common questions

Can I just cover the junk car so it isn't 'readily visible'?

The Posen rule exempts a vehicle in an enclosed building or one not readily visible from public places or neighboring property. A tarp on a driveway car is still plainly visible, so don't count on it. If the village sends notice, you can abate or ask for a hearing.

My street floods in heavy rain. Should I move the dead car first?

If you can do it safely, a dry spot helps. The county's hazard plan lists flooding on Harrison Avenue between 140th and 142nd, 143rd Street from Western to Harrison and other blocks. We buy flood-damaged cars too, so a wet car isn't a deal breaker.
