Step 1 of 2: the car

Flossmoor is about as owner-occupied as Chicago’s suburbs get: 95.1% of homes. Incorporated in 1924, the village has no interstate, US or state-numbered highway inside its limits; Governors Highway, Dixie Highway, Kedzie Avenue and Flossmoor Road carry its traffic. Pickups here are almost always from a private driveway or garage.

Why a cover won’t save a dead car

Flossmoor’s inoperable-vehicle rule has a detail other towns don’t spell out. Inoperable vehicles or parts in public view are a nuisance on public or private property, and the code says outright that covering the vehicle with a tarp doesn’t take it out of public view. A car counts as inoperable when parts have been removed or altered for at least seven days so it can’t run under its own power.

When police give notice, the owner has to remove the car. Seven days later, police can remove it themselves, and either the vehicle owner or the property owner pays. Cars kept inside a building and running historic vehicles over 25 years old are exempt.

Flossmoor streets after dark and after snow

No car may park on any Flossmoor street from 3 to 6 a.m., every day, apart from physicians on emergency calls. Weekday daytime parking on residential streets is capped at five hours between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. A non-running car simply can’t live on a Flossmoor street.

Snow tightens it again. Once two inches fall, parking stops on every street until it’s plowed, and the snow emergency routes, including Central Drive, part of Flossmoor Road, Hawthorne Lane, Leavitt Avenue, Park Drive and Sterling Avenue, stay closed until cleared curb to curb.

Alleys allow only loading, with 10 feet kept clear, and unimproved surfaces are off-limits for parking.

Loans, titles and the pickup

If the car still has a loan and a lender is listed on your title, read our guide to selling a car with a lien in Illinois before you call. Otherwise, have your title ready, or tell us what papers you do have, a registration card, insurance paperwork, a bill of sale and photo ID; Illinois rules decide which work for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the phone.

Flossmoor pickups carry no towing charge, and you get paid at the moment of pickup. Flossmoor borders Homewood and Olympia Fields, both in our coverage, as are the towns on our full locations list.

Selling a car in Flossmoor: common questions

My car died on a Flossmoor snow route. Can it wait for the tow?

Not during a snow event. Section 270-6-3 requires a stalled car on a snow emergency route to be towed or pushed off the route right away. Get it off the route first, onto a driveway if you can, then call us to schedule the pickup.

I still owe money on the car. Can I junk it?

Usually the loan has to be dealt with first, because the lender is listed on the title. A payoff and lien release clear the way. Tell us about the loan on the call so we can explain what Illinois requires before a sale.
