Hazel Crest started out as “South Harvey,” settled in 1870, renamed in 1900 and incorporated in 1912. Most of its subdivisions went up between the 1950s and 1980s, from Hazel Crest Proper, the oldest, to Pottawatomie Hills, Village West and Stonebridge, and the village sits on the Tinley Moraine with 175th Street and Kedzie Avenue at its center.
The driveway isn’t safe either
Many towns tolerate a dead car on private property for a while. Hazel Crest’s resident guide doesn’t: inoperable vehicles may not be left on village streets or in driveways, and owners face warnings, citations, towing and, in some cases, arrest. A March 2026 ordinance backs that up by naming abandoned vehicles, and inoperable, dismantled or unlicensed vehicles stored outdoors, as public nuisances.
The towing chapter adds a procedure. Abandoned vehicles are towed only after notice, and the owner gets seven days to request a pre-tow hearing in writing. If you’ve received that notice, a sale is often faster than a hearing.
Snow and pavement rules by neighborhood
Hazel Crest’s snow rules vary by area. Village-wide, parking stops after two inches until removal is done, except in Hazel Crest Proper. Listed streets and subdivisions, among them Apple Tree, Chateaux Campagne, Highlands, Hillcrest, Pacesetter Knollcrest, Pottawatomie Hills, Stonebridge, Twin Creek Village and Village West, restrict parking while snow is falling. East of I-294, cars alternate odd and even sides from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. after a two-inch storm.
Parking on grass or any unpaved surface isn’t allowed anywhere, so the lawn isn’t an option for the dead car.
Paperwork when the title is missing
Title in hand is easiest. If it’s lost, you have two paths: request a duplicate from the Secretary of State first, or tell us which papers you do have (registration, insurance card, bill of sale, photo ID). Illinois rules decide which of those support a scrap sale, and we’ll tell you on the call whether yours qualify. Our guide on getting a duplicate Illinois title explains the first path.
Village stickers go on sale December 1 and must be displayed by January 31 for vehicles registered to a Hazel Crest address. Free towing, paid at pickup. We also buy in Markham, Homewood and Country Club Hills, and the full set is on our locations directory.
Selling a car in Hazel Crest: common questions
Will Hazel Crest tow an abandoned car without warning?
Not under the towing chapter. Abandoned vehicles are towed only after prior notice, and the owner has 7 days to ask for a pre-tow hearing in writing. That window is a good time to sell the car instead of fighting the tow.
I live in a Hazel Crest condo complex. Can you pick up from a shared lot?
Yes. A shared lot at a complex such as English Valley, Stonebridge, Gingko, Ironwood or Water's Edge works fine for a pickup. Tell us the building, where in the lot the car sits, and whether the association needs notice before a tow truck enters.
