Hinsdale’s clocks: three months, 30 days, and the morning ban

Hinsdale gives a dead car a fairly long runway, but its rules have more moving parts. A car counts as inoperable after three months of not being able to run under its own power. Separately, a vehicle can be called abandoned if it hasn’t moved in 30 days, if its plates expired 30 days ago, or if it has no current registration at all. For an inoperable car outside a building, the village can send written notice ordering you to dispose of it.

The street is less forgiving. Curb parking stops from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. every day, and again from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. on weekdays. The weekday-morning exemption for residents parking in their own block only works if the car carries a valid Hinsdale vehicle license, which a car you have stopped using may not have.

After 3 inches of snow, no one may park on a public street for the next 12 hours. Downtown alleys and several central streets also become snow routes when posted.

Pickup from Hinsdale homes

Hinsdale is almost entirely single-family houses, about nine in ten owner-occupied, so the car is most likely on a private driveway or in a garage. Detached garages and long driveways are fine. Tell us about a narrow alley entrance or a tight turn if there is one.

If you live near the downtown historic district, mention whether the car is on a street that becomes a posted snow route, so the pickup can be planned around it in winter.

Have the title and a photo ID ready when the driver arrives. If the title is in a late relative’s name, or can’t be found at all, list the documents you do hold, such as old registration, insurance cards or a will or estate paper, and we check them against Illinois requirements for a scrap sale on the call.

Donate, sell privately, or scrap

For an older car that still has some life in it, a charity donation or a private sale can look better than a scrap offer. The answer depends on the car’s condition and your tax situation. Our guide on junking, selling or donating a car walks through each option.

Selling a car in Hinsdale: common questions

Does a car in my Hinsdale garage count as inoperable?

No. Hinsdale's definition of an inoperable vehicle leaves out cars kept inside a building, as well as historic vehicles over 25 years old. The nuisance rules bite when a dead car sits outside, on the driveway or the street.

Should I renew my Hinsdale vehicle sticker for a car I'm about to junk?

The village license runs to April 30 and is tied to vehicles registered or kept in Hinsdale. If the car will be gone before renewal season, ask Village Hall whether you need to buy one. Once it is sold, it is no longer a vehicle kept in the village.

Is it better to donate an old car than to junk it?

It depends on what the car would bring and how you file taxes. A charity will usually sell the car, and your deduction rules follow from what happens to it. Compare that with a scrap offer before deciding; our guide lays out donation, private sale and junking side by side.
