Houses, garages, and a one-week limit
Western Springs is almost entirely single-family houses, and nearly every one is lived in by its owner. Census estimates put owner-occupancy above 95%. So a junk car here is far more likely to be in a driveway or garage than out on the street.
Outside the garage, the village gives it a week. Chapter 7-9 of the code says a dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked or junked vehicle can’t stay on private property more than seven days, and only 48 hours on village property. The village’s definition of “abandoned” is also worth knowing: a car that lacks a current state registration and hasn’t moved for a week can qualify, even if it would start.
The process isn’t sudden, though. Before the village tows, it must give written notice at least 21 days ahead, in person or by certified mail. If that letter arrives, you have time to sell the car rather than lose it.
Rust, snow and the Midway rule
Around Chicago, years of winter road salt are what finish off a lot of older cars. Salt eats at brake lines, rocker panels and frames, and a badly rusted frame is often not worth repairing. Our guide to road salt rust on Chicago-area cars explains how to tell when a car has reached that point.
Snow also shapes the pickup. Western Springs bans street parking for 12 hours after 2 inches of snow, and the trigger is the reading at Midway Airport, not your block. Overnight, from 3 to 6 a.m., no car may park on any village street without police permission. A car that can’t move should be off the street before either rule applies.
Two more limits: alleys are only for loading and unloading, with 10 feet kept clear, and parking on a street to show a car for sale is banned.
The rest of the process
Have the title handy. If it’s gone, list the papers you can find, and we’ll check what Illinois law accepts for a scrap sale before we schedule anything. Towing is free, you’re paid at pickup, and we can often come the same day anywhere between Ogden Avenue, Willow Springs Road, Plainfield Road and I-294.
We work all around Western Springs, including La Grange, Indian Head Park and Hinsdale. Our service area directory lists the rest.
Selling a car in Western Springs: common questions
The village sent me a notice about an inoperable car. How long do I have?
Western Springs must give written notice at least 21 days before it tows an abandoned or inoperable vehicle, and the owner has those 21 days to move or repair it. That is plenty of time to get a quote and schedule a pickup, as long as you don't wait until the last week.
Why does Western Springs measure snow at Midway?
The village's snow parking rule uses the snowfall reading at Midway Airport: once 2 inches or more fall there, street parking is banned for 12 hours or until the snow is removed. A dead car on the street gets caught by that rule even if your block looks clear.
