How Oak Brook’s code treats a car that stopped moving
Two separate tests in Oak Brook’s code can apply to a dead car on a driveway. The first is condition and time: a car too damaged to drive, or one that hasn’t moved in a week and looks deserted, counts as abandoned. The second is registration. A vehicle with lapsed plates is unlawful on open premises regardless of whether it runs.
Both point the same way. Outside an enclosed building, a non-running or unregistered car has about a week before it becomes a problem, and police can remove and impound vehicles that appear to break the chapter. If the car is already in your garage, you have more breathing room. If it is on the driveway, it is worth deciding sooner.
Pickup on Oak Brook’s streets and private drives
Most of the village is single-family homes, and about nine in ten households own their home, so the usual pickup is straight from a private driveway or attached garage. Long drives and side-load garages are fine. Mention a steep slope, a tight turn or a gate code when you call.
A car left at the curb is a different story, because Oak Brook clears its streets of parked cars from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. every night. The village also bars parking on a street to display a car for sale, so a “for sale” sign in the window at the curb is not a workaround.
Loans, leases and company cars
With an office corridor along 22nd Street and I-88, some cars in Oak Brook are leased, financed or titled to a business. A leased car belongs to the leasing company, not the driver, so the lessor has to be part of any sale. For a financed car, our guide to selling a car with a lien in Illinois explains payoff letters and lien releases.

Selling a car in Oak Brook: common questions
Is it legal to keep an unplated car in my Oak Brook driveway?
Not for long. Oak Brook makes it unlawful to leave a vehicle on open premises unless it is currently registered in Illinois or another state, and an abandoned vehicle can't stay more than 7 days outside an enclosed building. A garage is the only safe spot while you sell it.
Can I sell a wrecked car that still has a loan on it?
Usually, once the lender is dealt with. While a lienholder is listed on the title, the lender has a claim on the car, so the loan generally has to be paid off and the lien released before ownership can pass. Tell us about the loan when you call and we will go over what is needed.
Can I fix the car on my Oak Brook driveway instead of selling it?
Only in an emergency. Oak Brook's zoning code bars vehicle repair work in off-street parking areas, emergencies aside. A car that needs an engine, transmission or major body work has to go to a shop, or it can go to us as scrap.
