A village of home sites, warehouses and highways
Hodgkins is unusual. Census estimates say about three out of four homes in the village are mobile homes, with a smaller number of single-family houses. Around them is heavy industry: the UPS hub at 1 UPS Way, which Wikipedia calls the largest package sorting center in the world, plus part of the Vulcan Materials quarry and The Quarry shopping center. I-55, I-294, La Grange Road and Joliet Road all run inside village limits.
For a pickup at a mobile-home site, the details that matter are the community name, the site number, and whether the office wants to know a tow truck is coming. Say so if the car is boxed in or has flat tires.
Storm-damaged and unregistrable cars
Storms are a real risk here. The EF-1 tornado of July 12, 2023 followed Route 66 through the village and hit The Quarry, shops on East Avenue, and Lenzi Avenue.
Hodgkins has a code section that matters here. Keeping a vehicle that the Illinois Secretary of State can’t license is a nuisance. So is a yard where wrecked or disabled cars pile up. Parking rules for a car that won’t start
- Snow routes. After 2 inches, East Avenue, Joliet Road, LaGrange Road and 67th Street must be clear, along with every street signed “No Parking At Any Time.” Violators can be towed on the spot.
- Odd and even sides. From November through April, after a 2-inch snowfall, park only on the side that matches the date, or in your driveway.
- For-sale cars. Parking on a street to display a vehicle for sale is banned.
