Two ways a Lombard car becomes a nuisance

Lombard’s code looks at a parked car in two ways, and either one is enough. The first is condition: an engine, wheels or other parts removed or damaged so the car can’t move on its own, for at least a week. The second is paperwork: a car without evidence of registration counts as inoperable for any period of time. Both rules apply in public view, outside a garage.

The notice period is short. Lombard’s nuisance notices give somewhere from 3 to 10 days, so a car that has been “about to be fixed” since spring can turn into a deadline fast. Selling it for scrap is often the simplest way to meet it, and the non-running car options guide weighs that against repairing or selling privately.

Apartment and condo lots around Yorktown

Apartments are a big part of Lombard’s housing. More than a third of its homes sit in complexes of five units or larger, and new residential projects such as Lilac Station and Yorktown Reserve have gone up along the Yorktown Center corridor. A dead car in a shared lot is still a car in public view, so the nuisance rules reach it.

For a lot pickup, tell us the complex name, the building and the space, and let management know a tow truck is coming. Garage-level spaces with low clearance need a mention ahead of time.

Single-family streets and the overnight ban

Just over half of Lombard’s housing is single-family detached homes. On those blocks, from the streets around Lilacia Park outward, pickup is usually from a driveway or garage.

What doesn’t work is the curb. Lombard closes its streets to parking from 2:00 to 5:00 a.m., overnight exceptions stop once more than an inch of snow falls, and the code separately forbids leaving a wrecked or nonoperating vehicle on any street.

Because unregistered cars count as inoperable here, lapsed plates often go hand in hand with a code problem. If paperwork has gone missing as well, tell us exactly what you still hold, from the title to an old registration card or insurance card, plus your ID. Which of those can support a scrap sale is set by Illinois rules, and we confirm it with you on the call.

Selling a car in Lombard: common questions

How long do I get after Lombard sends a nuisance notice about my car?

Between 3 and 10 days, depending on what the notice says, not counting the day you receive it. The village can extend or shorten that window. If the car is going for scrap anyway, call us when the notice arrives so pickup fits inside the deadline.

Can I use an overnight parking request for a car that won't start?

Not really. Overnight requests are capped at 4 nights a month and refused on nights with more than an inch of snow, and Lombard separately bars leaving a nonoperating or wrecked vehicle on any street. A dead car belongs on a driveway or in a lot until pickup.

Does my Lombard apartment complex have to approve the tow?

It's a private lot, so check with the manager first. Give us the building, the space number and any gate code, and confirm the car is yours to sell. The village's nuisance rule covers cars in public view outside a garage, so a lot is not a safe place to leave one for long.
