Seventy-two hours at the curb, thirty days in the drive

Niles has two different timers for a car that’s going nowhere. On a public street or alley, a car can’t sit in one spot past 72 hours unless police have said yes. Three days, running or not.

On private property the threshold is longer, but it’s there. A vehicle that can’t be driven in its present condition, or that has sat unused for over 30 straight days and looks deserted, is presumed abandoned. If it isn’t moved within seven days of a notice, the village starts its removal process.

The same section also covers for-sale signs. Putting one on a car parked on private property is barred except on land zoned for vehicle sales, so a hand-lettered “for sale, as-is” sign in the windshield isn’t the way to unload a junk car in Niles.

Snow and alleys

Winter in Niles works in steps. On posted streets, parking stops after a 1-inch snowfall until the plows have been through. After 3 inches, the rest of the village goes odd-side first: the odd-numbered side stays clear for a day after the snow ends, then the even side gets its turn for a day. A handful of blocks, including parts of Milwaukee Avenue and Dempster Street, are exempt.

Alleys have their own rule: nobody may park so as to block another property’s driveway or garage entrance off the alley. If the junk car is behind your garage, we load it and keep the alley open.

Ahead of the tow

Remove the Niles village sticker, take off the plates, and clean out your things. A simple sale document protects you; our junk car bill of sale guide shows what to put in it.

If the title is lost, don’t let that hold up the sale; Niles’ 30-day clock keeps running either way. Tell us which records you still have, like registration, insurance or a past bill of sale, plus a photo ID, and we’ll explain what Illinois allows for a scrap sale.

Neighboring towns: Morton Grove to the northeast, Park Ridge to the west and Skokie to the east. All the others are on our areas page.

Selling a car in Niles: common questions

Can I just put a for-sale sign on my dead car in the driveway?

Probably not. The Niles section on abandoned vehicles on private property also bars placing for-sale signs on such vehicles except where the property is zoned for vehicle sales. A junk sale avoids the sign question entirely: we quote it and tow it.

What do I do with the Niles vehicle sticker on the car I'm junking?

Peel it off before the tow. Niles requires the seller to remove the village license sticker as soon as a vehicle carrying it is sold, and a separate section covers transferring a license from one vehicle to another if you're replacing the car.
