Few suburbs are as single-family as South Holland: 95% of housing units are detached houses and 82.8% are owner-occupied. A pickup here is usually a driveway job. The village’s junk-car rule also lands on homeowners directly, since it reaches private property and not only the street.
What the village calls an inoperable car
A vehicle becomes “inoperable” in South Holland once it has been unable to run on its own power for seven days. From then on it can’t be left outdoors on either public or private property, and the code labels it a public nuisance. Exceptions are narrow: a car inside a building, one at a properly zoned business, an antique over 25 years old, and public storage.
If a car stays put, the police chief can order it removed after a seven-day wait that includes notice and a hearing, or immediately when it creates a traffic hazard. Parking it on the grass doesn’t help, because § 10-160 restricts residential parking to driveways and designated pads.
Flood-prone streets by the river
The village sits on flat, low land close to the Calumet River. The county hazard plan reports overbank flooding beside the Little Calumet River and Thorn Creek, record high water in 2008 and 22 FEMA repetitive-loss properties. Trouble spots include 157th and Woodlawn West, 170th and Cottage, the underpass at 162nd and Wausau, 173rd and Dodson, and the area around Gowens Park leading into the Pacesetter subdivision.
A cabin or engine bay that took on water is frequently beyond repair. If the insurer totals the car, our guide on what to do with a totaled car in Illinois explains salvage titles and owner-retained salvage before you decide to sell.
Setting up the pickup
Double-check the address you give us. Street numbers here run three blocks off from Chicago’s, so 162nd Street in South Holland matches Chicago’s 159th. US-6 follows 162nd and meets the Bishop Ford Freeway at exit 73.
A title helps if you have it. If it’s gone, tell us what you do hold: a registration card, insurance card, bill of sale, driver’s license or state ID. Illinois rules determine which papers support a scrap sale, and we confirm that on the call. Towing costs you nothing, and you’re paid as the car is collected.
Our coverage includes Dolton to the north, Phoenix to the west and Thornton to the south, and the area list shows every other town.
Selling a car in South Holland: common questions
My car took on water in a South Holland flood. Will you buy it?
Yes, water-damaged cars are routine for us. When an insurer is involved, settle that claim first, because it may take the car or brand it salvage. After that, tell us the condition and what papers you have, and we'll quote you.
Can I park an unplated junk car on the street until pickup?
No. Section 10-155.1 does not allow a car without a current license plate to stand or park on a public street, and a village-registered car also needs a current village sticker. Keep it on your driveway and we'll load it there.
