Step 1 of 2: the car

Thornton is a small village, about 2,400 people in 2.4 square miles, best known for the quarry that the Tri-State Tollway (I-80/I-294) cuts straight through. Most homes are detached houses and close to 80% are owner-occupied, so junk cars here usually sit in a driveway or alongside a garage.

A code that names rust

Plenty of towns write rules about “inoperable” cars. Thornton’s chapter on abandoned, wrecked, dismantled or inoperative vehicles goes further and lists rusted and junked vehicles too. Parking or storing any of them on public or private property is barred, and on private property it’s a public nuisance. Keeping the car inside a building, or at a properly zoned business, are the main exceptions.

Rust is often the real reason a car ends up there. Years of salted winter roads eat brake lines, rocker panels and frames, and by the time the repair estimate arrives it’s bigger than the car’s value. Our guide to road salt and rust damage explains when rust makes a repair uneconomic.

Snow, Clark Street and the front yard

Thornton’s snow rule moves quickly. After every snowfall of two inches or more, cars have to be off the street no later than two hours after it ends and stay off until the village finishes plowing. A car that won’t start can’t comply.

Clark Street has its own posted ban, both sides, south of 167th Street (Armory Drive) and north of the Tollway, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. And the code bars parking between the front of a house and the street except on the driveway, so pushing a dead car onto the lawn trades one problem for another.

On the street, a car that’s in disrepair and can’t be driven, or that hasn’t moved for over a week and looks deserted, is presumed abandoned.

Selling it and getting it gone

Call with the year, make and model, its condition and where it’s parked. If you have the title, great. If not, tell us what papers you can show, like an old registration, the insurance card, a bill of sale and your ID; Illinois rules decide which ones work for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the phone. No tow charge, and payment comes when the truck does.

We also buy cars in neighboring South Holland, Glenwood and Homewood. Our full list of service towns has the rest.

Selling a car in Thornton: common questions

Is a car with rusted-through panels a nuisance in Thornton even if it runs?

The nuisance section lists rusted vehicles alongside wrecked, dismantled and inoperative ones, and § 9-10-2 ties a 'junked' vehicle to missing current plates or village tags. If yours is rusty but running and plated, ask the village; if it's rusted and dead, selling it ends the question.

Can I park the dead car on the lawn in front of my house?

No. Thornton's no-parking list covers parkways and the area between the front of a residence and the roadway, except a driveway. Keep it on the driveway until pickup and tell us where it sits.
