The 7-day notice and what counts as inoperable
Wilmette’s code is specific. A car becomes “inoperable” when a week has passed since an engine, wheels or other parts came off or broke, leaving it unable to run on its own power. Ordinary repair work doesn’t count. If that car sits where the public can see it, on the street or in your driveway, it’s a nuisance, and the village can issue a notice.
From the notice, you have 7 days. Miss it and the fines begin, and police are allowed to haul the car away. A car stored inside a garage falls outside the rule.
That timeline is tight but workable. Have the title or your other papers ready when you call so the pickup isn’t held up.
Winter on Wilmette streets
Snow changes the math for any car parked at the curb. Once 2 inches is on the ground, parking is banned on every street in the village, and the ban holds for a day after the snowfall ends or until plows finish. On narrow streets of 27 feet or less, a signed side can be closed during any snow, sleet or ice event.
Some blocks also carry 2 to 5 a.m. no-parking signs, set street by street on residents’ petitions. A car that doesn’t start can’t be moved for any of these, so a curbside junk car in December is a ticket waiting to happen.
Pickup across the village
About three out of four homes in Wilmette are single-family houses, so the car is likely in a driveway or a garage. Tell us whether the car rolls and how close the truck can get. If it’s in a garage, make sure the door opens fully and nothing blocks the bumper.
Before the tow, ask the village what happens to the vehicle license on the car you’re selling, remove plates and any toll transponder, and take your belongings. Need help with the sale document? Our guide to an Illinois bill of sale for a junk car shows what to include.
Missing title? Tell us what else you hold (registration, insurance card, driver’s license). Illinois decides which papers are acceptable for scrapping a vehicle, and we’ll check yours by phone first.
Neighbors we also cover
Wilmette touches six other towns. We serve Kenilworth to the north, Evanston to the south and Glenview to the west, among others listed on our areas served page.
Selling a car in Wilmette: common questions
The village left a notice on my car. What now?
Wilmette gives the owner 7 days from the notice to get rid of an inoperable vehicle that's in public view; after that, fines start and police can remove it. Call us with the notice in hand and we'll try to schedule the tow inside that window.
Does a junk car kept in my garage fall under the nuisance rule?
No. The Wilmette nuisance section exempts a vehicle kept inside a building when not in use. The village vehicle license is a separate matter, since it's tied to where the car is registered. If the car is past fixing, selling it still frees the garage.
