Five days, then it’s a nuisance

Bolingbrook gives a dead or unregistered car less time than you might think. Section 34-148 sets a 5-day limit for any vehicle left on private or public property that is wrecked, dismantled or inoperative, or that is unlicensed or carries an expired state or municipal license. After that it’s a nuisance unless it’s enclosed in a building.

The companion rule, § 34-140(b), treats any junk vehicle or part left out longer than 5 days the same way, with plates or without. And § 34-141 puts the duty to remove it on the property owner. So a tenant’s dead car becomes the landlord’s problem as well.

Five days goes fast when you’re waiting on a repair estimate. Selling the car before the deadline keeps it simple.

Overnight and snow rules on the street

Leaving the car at the curb isn’t a workaround. From 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. no vehicle may park on any street, parkway or alley unless police have been notified and approved it. Once snow passes 2 inches, streets have to be clear until removal is done. Parking with expired state registration on a public street is its own ticket, with each day a separate offense, and street repairs are limited to emergency fixes to get the car moving.

A car parked illegally for 7 continuous days can be deemed abandoned and impounded under § 50-47.

How pickup works in the village

Bolingbrook was built as a planned town in the 1960s, and most homes have a driveway or garage: about 72% of units are detached houses and about 14% are townhouses. Tell us whether the car is in a garage, on the drive or in a parking lot, and whether it rolls.

A 2022 village rule keeps vehicles used to buy or collect junk from parking more than 10 minutes in a residential district or holding junk there overnight. A tow pickup is a load-and-go stop, so it fits that rule. I-55, I-355 and Bolingbrook Drive (IL-53) put every corner of the village in easy reach.

Have your papers ready and your plates off. Which documents Illinois accepts for a scrap sale depends on your situation, and we’ll sort that out by phone. You’re paid at pickup. Not sure junking beats selling or donating? Our junk, sell or donate comparison lays it out.

We also buy in Romeoville, Plainfield and Woodridge; browse all pickup areas.

Selling a car in Bolingbrook: common questions

How long can an expired-plate car sit in my Bolingbrook driveway?

Five days. Section 34-148 covers any vehicle that is unlicensed or has an expired state or municipal license, as well as wrecked or inoperative ones, and allows it outdoors on private property no longer than 5 days unless it's kept enclosed in a building.

My car died on the street at night. What should I do?

Bolingbrook bans street parking from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. unless you notify police first and get approval (§ 50-43). Call the police non-emergency line about the car, then call us to arrange a free tow.

Do you pick up on the DuPage County side of Bolingbrook?

Yes. The village spans Will and DuPage counties, and we buy and tow on both sides. The paperwork doesn't change with the county line, because title transfers follow Illinois state rules.
