The garage rule in Romeoville’s zoning code

Romeoville puts its main dead-car rule in the zoning chapter, not the traffic code. Section 157.026(A)(2) says no inoperative or partially dismantled vehicle may sit on residential property unless it’s inside an enclosed garage. A driveway, side yard or carport doesn’t qualify.

Business districts get similar treatment. Outdoor parking or storage of abandoned, damaged, inoperable, dismantled or unregistered vehicles is banned there except on properties approved for it, so a car left behind a shop or in an office lot is covered too.

Enforcement isn’t only complaint-driven. Under § 92.100, police and enforcement officials periodically inspect the village for inoperable or abandoned vehicles on private and public property.

Street parking: the two-car cap and odd-even snow days

The street isn’t a holding area either. No more than two vehicles from the same address may be parked on a village street at once (§ 73.09), and repairing a car on the street is unlawful except for emergency repairs to get it moving (§ 73.12).

Winter adds an odd-even rule. After a 24-hour snowfall of 2 inches or more, normal street parking ends until removal is done, and you may park only on the odd-numbered side on odd days and the even side on even days, each day starting at 6:00 a.m. A car in the wrong spot is ticketed and stickered with a notice of intent to tow, then can be towed 24 hours later. A car that won’t start can’t switch sides.

Two streets have their own overnight ban: no parking from midnight to 6:00 a.m. on Ridgewood Avenue or the south side of Greenwood Avenue.

Getting a truck to you

Romeoville sits just west of the Des Plaines River, about 26 miles southwest of Chicago. Weber Road’s I-55 interchange, rebuilt as a diverging diamond in 2022, and IL-53 (Independence Boulevard) bring the truck in. Roughly 69% of homes are detached houses and about 16% are townhouses, so tell us whether the car is in an attached garage, a shared lot or a driveway, and whether it rolls.

Gather your papers before the visit: title, registration, bill of sale, ID, whatever you have. What Illinois accepts depends on the car’s history, so we review your papers on the call before anything is booked. Pickup is free, and payment is made right there when the car is loaded. If yours won’t start at all, this guide to selling a dead car lays out the choices.

We also serve Bolingbrook, Lockport and Plainfield, plus the other towns on our locations page.

Selling a car in Romeoville: common questions

Can I keep a car that won't start in my Romeoville driveway?

Not under the zoning code. Section 157.026(A)(2) bars inoperative or partially dismantled vehicles on residential property unless they're inside an enclosed garage, and village officials inspect periodically for inoperable vehicles on private property under § 92.100.

How does the odd-even snow parking rule work?

After 2 inches or more of snow in 24 hours, normal street parking ends until removal is complete. Until then you may park only on the odd-numbered side on odd calendar days and the even side on even days, with each day starting at 6:00 a.m.

We have three cars at one address. Does that matter?

On the street it does: § 73.09 allows no more than 2 vehicles from the same address on a village street at once. Selling the dead one frees a spot for the cars you actually drive.
