A week of expired plates is enough
Plainfield’s vehicle code doesn’t wait for a car to fall apart. Section 5-191 sets three categories: inoperative (parts removed or altered for 7 days, or unable to run), abandoned (unmoved for 7 days and apparently deserted) and unlicensed (plates expired 7 days or more). Section 5-193 makes all three a public nuisance anywhere in the village, your own driveway included.
Only a few cars are exempt: one stored inside a building, one at a wrecking or junk business, or one that’s temporarily disabled for ordinary repair. A car you’ve stopped registering because it isn’t worth fixing doesn’t fit any of them.
When police act, the property owner or occupant is responsible for disposing of the vehicle and gets notice to remove it within 7 days. If the car creates a traffic hazard, it can be towed immediately and the owner pays.
Overnight and snow rules
Every village street is off limits from 1:00 to 6:00 a.m., with police permission available up to three times a month. Once snow on the street hits 3 inches, nobody parks until the plows have been through. Posted cleaning or repair work clears the curb too.
Downtown is different again. Streets such as Lockport, Chicago, DesPlaines and Illinois carry 2, 3 or 4-hour limits enforced by chalking tires, so a dead car there won’t last a day.
Pickup in a fast-grown village
Plainfield had about 4,500 people in 1990 and 44,762 in 2020, so much of the housing is recent: nearly 80% of units are detached houses and 88% of homes are owner-occupied. Expect the driver to work from your driveway or garage, so tell us whether the car rolls, whether the garage door works, and which side of the house it’s on.
Division Street carries Route 59 and US-30 through the middle of town, and I-55 runs along the east edge with Ward Road as its west frontage road. Pickups cover both banks of the DuPage River, which runs through the village center.
If the car isn’t fully paid off
A car with a lender still listed on the title can generally be junked once the lien is cleared. Our guide to selling a car with a lien in Illinois covers the payoff letter and lien release. For any car, list your papers when you call; Illinois sets the requirements for a scrap sale, and we’ll match what you have against them.
We tow at no cost to you and pay when we collect the car. Next door, we serve Romeoville, Bolingbrook and Joliet; every town is on our areas page.
Selling a car in Plainfield: common questions
When does expired registration make my car a nuisance in Plainfield?
Once the plates have been expired for 7 days. Section 5-191 calls that an unlicensed vehicle, and § 5-193 makes unlicensed, inoperative and abandoned vehicles a public nuisance anywhere in the village, including private driveways, unless the car is kept inside a building.
Can I leave the car on the street overnight while I wait for pickup?
Not between 1:00 and 6:00 a.m. unless police give permission, which § 5-167 allows up to 3 times per calendar month. Keep the car in the driveway or garage if you can, and tell us exactly where it is when you book.
There's still a loan on my car. Can I junk it?
It's possible, but the lender's interest on the title has to be dealt with first, usually through a payoff and lien release. Tell us the lender and where the loan stands when you call, and we'll explain what Illinois title rules require.
