Three counties, one village
Lemont is mostly in Cook County, but parts of the village reach into Will and DuPage counties, and the village is split into a main area plus 10 exclaves (separate pieces of village land cut off from the rest), 8.74 square miles in all. If you’re not sure which county you’re in, it doesn’t matter to us: we buy junk cars across all of it, tow for free and pay at pickup.
The town grew up along the Illinois & Michigan Canal and the parallel Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, with limestone quarrying nearby. Today I-355 has an interchange at 127th Street, I-55 meets I-355 on the Romeoville line, and the Heritage Corridor stops at Lemont’s Metra station on Main Street.
Weight limits on village streets
Lemont posts truck weight limits by street. Non-designated village streets carry a 7-ton limit, while Main Street (Lockport to Illinois Street) and State Street (127th to Illinois) allow 40 tons, and 127th Street between Smith Road and High Road allows 25. When you call, tell us the street and how the car is parked so the pickup can be planned around those limits.
Inoperable cars and where they can sit
A car counts as inoperable here once parts have been removed or it hasn’t been able to move under its own power for seven days, temporary repairs aside. Anywhere the public can see it, it’s a nuisance, and police may remove it after seven days’ notice. A towed car comes back only after the tow and storage bills are paid.
The zoning code goes further: inoperable vehicles can’t be kept in unenclosed parking areas, repairs and dismantling can’t happen outside an enclosed space, and front-yard parking is allowed only on the driveway. A dead car on a gravel pad beside the garage is out of line too.
Snow, downtown streets and papers
After 2 inches of snow, Lemont switches to odd/even parking by address in 24-hour periods starting at 9 a.m. Downtown, Canal Street and parts of Main, Stephen and Talcott have a Friday 3 to 6 a.m. ban, and Front Street has one every day. Oversized vehicles can’t sit on residential streets for more than 24 hours.
Have your title handy; vehicles registered to a Lemont address also need a village license. Without the title, list your paperwork for us and we’ll explain by phone which of those Illinois allows for scrapping. Our guide to junk car sales when the title is missing has the state details.
Nearby, we also buy cars in Homer Glen, Romeoville and Woodridge. Our areas page shows the rest.
Selling a car in Lemont: common questions
Which Lemont streets have overnight parking limits?
There's no village-wide overnight ban, but § 10.16.030 bars parking from 3 to 6 a.m. on Fridays on Canal Street, parts of Main, Stephen and Talcott, and Ed Bossert Drive, and on Front Street every day. A dead car parked downtown should be moved or sold quickly.
Can a junk car sit on a parking pad at my Lemont house?
Not for long. § 10.28.020 says an inoperable car that can be seen from public areas is a nuisance, removable after 7 days' notice, and the zoning code bars keeping inoperable vehicles in unenclosed parking areas. Front-yard parking is allowed only on the driveway.
