Outdoor storage is the real issue
In Homer Glen, the question isn’t only whether a car is on the street. Section 200-30 says every vehicle in the residential districts (R-1 through R-6A) must be operable and carry current state license and registration, and inoperable vehicles may not be stored or parked outdoors at all.
The definition in § 200-27 is the familiar one: engine, wheels or other parts removed, altered or damaged for 7 days so the vehicle can’t run under its own power. Temporary repairs don’t count. But because § 200-30 also demands current registration, a car that starts fine and has expired plates is out of line too.
So the old truck by the shed, the project car under a tarp, the second car nobody renewed: all of them fall under the same rule unless they’re inside a garage.
Snow season and street limits
The village runs its snow rule on a calendar. From October 1 to May 1, after 2 inches or more of snow, nobody may park on a village street for 12 hours unless it has been cleared. Fines climb for repeat offenses in the same winter.
Two more rules matter for a dead car. Trailers, travel trailers and RVs can’t sit on public streets, registered or not, so parking a borrowed trailer out front to haul the car yourself runs into § 200-17. And vehicles bigger than light-duty are kept off the street except during short-term work, deliveries or services, which is what a tow pickup is.
A pickup in a village of single-family homes
Homer Glen is almost entirely owner-occupied houses: about 90% of units are detached single-family homes. Tell us if the car is in a detached garage, a pole building or at the back of a long drive. The I-355 ramps at 159th Street and at Archer Avenue sit on the village’s line with Lockport.
Have your papers together: title, registration, any bill of sale, ID. Bring them up when you call: Illinois requirements for scrap sales differ depending on what’s missing, and we’ll tell you where you stand. The tow costs nothing and you’re paid at pickup. For a sense of what moves an offer, read how junk car value is set.
We also pick up in Lockport, Orland Park and Mokena, and in every town on the locations list.
Selling a car in Homer Glen: common questions
Is a car with expired registration a problem in Homer Glen even if it runs?
In residential districts, yes. Section 200-30 requires every vehicle to be operable and carry current state license and registration, and § 200-16 bars parking on a public street without the registration a vehicle needs. Renewing it or selling it are the clean options.
When does the snow parking rule apply?
From October 1 to May 1. After a snowfall of 2 inches or more, § 200-22 bans parking on any village street for the next 12 hours unless the street has been cleared. Since a dead car can't be moved out of the plow's way, keep it off the street.
Can a tow truck stop on my street during pickup?
Section 200-32 keeps vehicles heavier than light-duty off public streets except during short-term work, deliveries or services. A pickup is a short service stop: the driver loads the car and leaves.
